Actually, there is. Silent Hill is a perfect example of this. The writer and art director of the first three games no longer wanted to make Silent Hill games because they felt like it was over.
Mafia 2 is easily my favorite mafia-related game. I enjoyed it a lot, and I don't want another game that tries to imitate it, because not only is it going to be worse, but it's also going to make me think of what could have been.

That's a bad comparision, because games after Yakuza 2 are a continuation of Kazuma Kiryu's story, which is basically a character-focused Japanese crime drama in video game form. It wouldn't have made sense to call it something that Yakuza even if the main protagonist is techinically not in the Yakuza anymore. The games that don't feature Kazuma are treated as spin off games, not main sequels in the series.

Hey I would have loved a direct sequel as much as the next guy. Vito's story still had a lot of potential and I'm saddened to see him step out of the limelight. That being said however, I'm not against this new installment. If anything, this game will breathe new life into the franchise and we'll probably be back to seeing games more in line with the first to Mafia games.
Looks cool. Gunplay seems smooth, and I really dig the setting.
I do feel bad for Mafia fans that they're series label got stuck onto what seems to be a very different game though.
