So what's the whole point of the Witcher 1 game in terms of plot? None of the antagonists mattered in the grand scheme of things, and hardly referenced in Witcher 3.
It was basically a prototype for witcher 3's plot, just replace ciri with alvin.
The only point of TW1 was the ending cutscene so you would know why the fuck Geralt the politically neutral monster hunter was being Foltest's bodyguard.

The whole series, books included, are just compilations of short stories with practically no overarching plot elements outside of recurring characters and themes. none of the games have a coherent story simply because so many events happen within each one. 3's the easiest to sum up as it's the most casual "Quest for Ciri", but 1 and 2 are both just, "things that happen to geralt".

It was CDPR's test run to globalize the series, as well as be their fanboy appreciation effort. They couldn't scare off too many newcomers by introducing a complex world from the get go with a character barely anyone outside of East Europe knew. Throw in a revenge story and substitute Ciri with Alvin and you virtually have the novel saga.
Ive been thinking about playing all 3 witcher games to get the full story. Ive heard 1 was decent but the combat was pretty shitty, is it worth it?

If you are willing to overlook its wonky combat, awful early to mid game pacing and some amateur level production values, it's a game worth playing. I thought the atmosphere was great, some of the gameplay mechanics like alchemy are really refined and the best in the series, the writing has some enjoyable moments and music is great.
It's basically introducing the world and setting to an audience that hadn't even heard of the Witcher before. The game came before the books were translated, and large sections are adaptations of short stories.
