Hi, I am a certified expert on 3D platformers, and I just thought I'd let /v/ in on a little secret: The official rankings of some of the most popular 3D platformers. So, let's start.
Banjo-Tooie > Jak and Daxter > Rayman 2 > Ty 2: Bush Rescue > Jak II > Crash 3 > Crash 2 > DK64 > Banjo-Kazooie > Conker's Bad Fur Day > Jak 3 > > Crash Bandicoot > Ty the Tasmanian Tiger > Ratchet and Clank 2 > Ratchet and Clank > Gex 3D > Croc > Earthworm Jim 3D >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> 2D Platformers > Mario 64
No need to thank me, I felt the need to share this with you since I have noticed Mario 64 getting praised as a good game recently and I was appaled at this blatant spread of misinformation. Remember anons, knowledge is power!
>>334873241
Why no ratchet and clank 3, thats the best one
Also ty 2 is stupidly short, i finished it in an afternoon
Also no rayman origins? Nostalgia faggots like you need to take off the goggles
Also jak 3 was shit and crash 3 was the best one
8/8
>>334873241
0/10. I think not even the most deluded rarefags that exist will defend DK64 as being better than anything.
>>334873241
Rare has never made a good 3D game.
You're right, DK64 is godlike.
>>334873401
Ididn't play Ratchet 3, anon, sorry. It's on my backlog, though
Also Rayman Origins is a 2D Platformer.
>>334873657
Need I remind you I am a certified 3D platformer expert?
>>334873770
Please refrain from making a fool of yourself, anon!
>>334873790
That it is, here is a man with taste.
>>334873241
Alright, Mr. "certified expert" let me see your ID.
Where the fuck is Voodoo Vince?
>no Battle for Bikini Bottom
>>334873241
What about Jet set radio
>inb4 it doesnt count
Literally how does it not count
>>334874008
They put your SSN, Credit Card information, and for some reason your mother's maiden name on 3D Platformer Expert IDs, so you can understand my reluctance to share it.
>>334874308
>>334874371
>>334874218
Note that this was a list for SOME of the most popular 3D platformers
BfBB, Rayman 3, Voodoo Vince, and JSR are not listed, but not forgotten!
>>334873241
Personally enjoyed Crash 2 more than 3 but this seems accurate, put R&C3 somewhere near DK64 and Jersey Devil next to Croc and I'm happy
If you have some spare time we could put together a Tier-chart
>>334874698
I have all the time in the world, my similarly-tasted friend
>>334873241
What do you have against SM64?
>certified expert in shitposting
this is what a degree in game design gets you, you little shits
Why the fuck is crash 3 below jak 2? Fix it nao
>>334873657
I actually love DK64 because I get a rush from collecting a bunch of completely pointless colorful things.
>>334874842
>>334874698
Let's start with SSS tier.
>Banjo-Tooie
And work our way down, eh?
>>334875246
I think it laid the groundwork for the genre brilliantly and I have fond memories playing it as a child. But the level design is almost offensively terrible, I can't name a single level that was well thought out or fun to play, and I'm fairly certain all of the terrain in the game is simply recolored ice, since Mario controls with all the grace of a drunk driver.
He retains the same abilities through the course of the game, which makes the game stale quickly, since most of the levels don't ask more of you than a backflip.
Getting kicked out of a level after collecting a star is nonsense, and the rest of the "collectables" are just differently valued coins that serve no purpose other than to increase your lives and get an extra star.
The camera controls obviously go without saying.
And the biggest flaw of the game? The most damning error made by the devs? The biggest blemish on this so-called "masterpiece"?Luigi isn't playable.
>>334873241
I too can rank games without moving the names around first.
>>334876541
Is this fine? I could switch it to letter tiers
>>334876541
>He retains the same abilities through the course of the game, which makes the game stale quickly, since most of the levels don't ask more of you than a backflip
That's the whole point ya dingus. The fact that there's no arbitrary progression means the player can learn at their own pace, and an experienced player can use the more advanced movement options right out of the gate to get through levels faster/easier. While it's not the best 3D platformer ever, it still to this day has the best gameplay flow, and executing fast and precise movement is insanely satisfying. Just look at insane amount of speedrunners the game has attracted simply by having a movement system with so much depth which is so finely tuned that you could spend a lifetime playing it and still have room for improvement.
Sunshine kept the awesome movement, though 64 still did it ever so slightly better - but then Galaxy fucked it up by slowing down the pace and taking away the momentum from the gameplay, thus making every following 3D Mario game far less enjoyable than the first two.
>>334877043
I think there should be a "Bad" tier between good and Bad to differentiate bad games from irredeemable ones.
Where's Ape Escape faggot?
>>334873241
What, no Bubsy 3D?I never played Ty 2, fug. I should emulate that
>Hi, I haven't even played half of the best 3D platformers
What a shit thread.
>>334877605
You make some good points, my friend, some of which I hadn't considered.
I feel that sunshine really nailed what 64 started, though, and upgrades to the FLUDD made it more enjoyable for me than just Mario 64's higher jumps, and I will say that 64 is one of the most amazing games to see speedrun
>putting Conker above any 3D platformer when it gives up its minor platforming halfway through to make room for gimmick mounts and awkward shooting controls
>>334873241
>hack and fagxter that high
>furshit like ratchet and shit even rated
>chimp in pants=good taste and objectively good opinions
>anorexic Irish manlet = your opinion
>ranks 3d platformers
>lists a Crash game
>>334878496
Sounds good
let's put Banjo-Tooie, J&D, and Rayman 2 in God tier to start.
>>334873241
>Jak and Daxter
That boring monotonous piece of shit getting that high doesn't speak well of the rest of your list.
>>334879213
Ty 2, Jak II, Crash 3 and 2, Spongebob: BfBB, Rayman 3, Banjo-Kazooie, Conker, DK64, LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga, and Jak 3 in Great. Anyone want to debate/add any games in God or Great so far?
>>334878470
>>334878572
>>334879337
Insomniac, how can you even operate a keyboard? I would assume your fingers would be raw at this hour after a long day of milking the corpse of Ratchet and Clank.
Banjo-Tooie is complete trash. It's barely even a platformer, levels don't even have any significant obstacles or platforming until halfway through.
>>334879657
Kill yourself
>>334879473
Conker was a great game, could you call it a good platformer though?
>>334879801
You raise a fantastic question, anon
I actually feel that Conker has the weakest gameplay out of all of Rare's Nintendo-era games, but the combination of the writing, charm, and unique gameplay elements of the game make up for the fact that said gameplay often leaves something to be desired.
>>334880106
so it's not a good platformer
>>334880197
No, it's a great game that happens to be a 3D platformer.
>>334880298
conker isn't a great 3d platformer though
>doesn't list Spyro
>>334880106
>writing, charm, and unique gameplay elements
None of which improve the mediocre platforming.
You're pretty biased, OP.
>>334880436
I think that was evident by him putting mediocre games like Ty and Croc over something like DKC2 for no reason other than they're in 3D.
Or putting DK64 over anything.
>>334880436
>>334880362
Maybe not, but does being a great game with certain lackluster aspects not earn it a place on a list of good games of the same genre?
Making progress
>>334880752
I'm not saying it doesn't deserve a place since it has some 3D platforming, but on a list of 3D platformers, it certainly shouldn't be under "great".
>>334880754
You know, you could just use the box art.
>>334880729
But this is a list of 3D platformers, friend. Not 2D.
>>334881015
>But this is a list of 3D platformers
So why is Croc on it? That's a tank sim.
>>334881015
Then why does the OP say Croc is above all 2D platformers
>>334881015
>2D platformers are in the OP
you didn't think your shitposting through
>>334873241
>any of those above 2D platformers
Shit taste confirmed.
>>334877043
>>334878496
>>334880754
>2880x7920 image
>for text
What are you even doing
>>334881448
There are over 200 3D platformers in existence, plus I find it easier
Why are you only listing old shit?
>>334881856
Because it's a dead genre.
I g-guess I'll stop for today, fun thread w-while it lasted
Earthworm Gym should go in Okay
Would Spider-Man 2 be considered a 3D platformer?
>>334883323
Put Sonic Adventure 2 in Great nigga
>>334883323
One of the 4 Gexfags on this website reporting in.
I would say we are certainly a B rank series.
>>334883323
Rayman Legends and Rayman Origins are 2D platformers
>>334873241
Banjo Tooie fucking sucks, even compared to Kazooie
>>334883323
Is infamous really a platformer?
>>334883997
>Better levels
>Better moves
>Better mobility
>Levels can't be 100%ed in 10 minutes
>Boss fights
>better Music
>better Graphics
>MUCH better Hub world
Nah, you just played Banjo 1 first
Still here, was planning on filling it out myself later for fun
>>334883838
My nigga
>>334883935
My bad
>>334884241
>no
>no
>no
>backtracking and huge levels isnt fun
>yes
>no
>no
>no
>Jak better than RnC
Never
>>334884241
>Better levels
They're all empty wastelands with no significant obstacles or platforming. You won't even kill enemies since theres enough space that you can just run around them and they respawn in like five seconds.
>Better moves
Yeah all those great, useful moves like Hatch and Taxi-Pack and playing as Mumbo Jumbo just to drag him to a pad with his face on it.
>better Graphics
Technically yeah. Aesthetically looks grungy and ugly compared to Kazooie since they went with a muddier color palette for whatever reason.
Banjo-Tooie is the biggest example I can think of of a developer falling for the bigger=always better mindset. Just bloating the game with empty space and useless moves just to make it seem more substantial than it actually is
>>334884310
If you end up finishing it be sure to post it tomorrow
>>334882690
Mirrors Edge sequel.
Mario 64 is the absolute pinnacle of 3D platformers
>>334873241
I regret to inform you that your certification has been revoked.

>>334885108
>Conveniently leaving out moves like Ledge Grab, All the split-up moves that add more depth to the game, all the new options for vertical movement like spring shoes and claw clamber boots, multiple egg types, transformations that aren't just "Now you're small enough to fit in a hole!", Drill Bill, and Breegull Bash.
>Le banjo-tooie is empty meme
Each level is broken into small platforming sections just like in the first game, but on a scale that isn't miniscule
>>334885595
The ledge grab is the only move that's genuinely useful. Everything else is key and door shit that you're never going to use outside of very specific circumstances. Especially playing as Banjo solo since you're basically gimping yourself for the sake of accessing one or two specific context-sensitive moves every time you do it.
I mean this shit is so bad that Rareware made fun of it in Conker.
>transformations that aren't just "Now you're small enough to fit in a hole!"
Now you can talk to this guy to wash his clothes and stand in a specific place to use a move that hurts you otherwise.
>Each level is broken into small platforming sections just like in the first game, but on a scale that isn't miniscule
The only levels that have any significant platforming are Terrydactlland, Halifire Peaks and Cloud Cuckoo Land, and the last one is basically just a bunch of leftover assets thrown together randomly
>>334885127
Hope my taste isn't too shitty
>Why isn't [my favorite game] in God tier? SHIT LIST
>Banjo-Tooie
That's a load of shit
Everybody agrees the original was better
Banjo-Tooie was a cluster fuck
>>334873241
>Banjo-Tooie above anything
WRONG
WRONG
WRONG
WRONG
WRONG
>>334886573
This to be quite honest family
Kazooie >Tooie
>>334886531
>>334886751
These guys know.
Tooie proved that bigger =/= better
>>334886531
>>334886573
>>334886751
>>334886838
These
Tooie was a great game and i personally liked how big and connected the world was
but even then, it had a problem of Bigger =/= Better
and it became even worse with DK64
and i absolutely love DK64 as my personal favorite 3D Platformer well aware of the flaws
but it proved
>>334886496
Put
Jsr in god tier
Jsrf in god tier
Ty 1 and 2 in god tier
Blinx the time sweeper in mid tier
Are there any actual 3D platformers (not collecting shit in a big world/doing shitty puzzles) for the PSP that i might have missed out on?
