I liked it. Really sold the future historical aspect right, and I'm speaking as a Korean. The twist is more interesting than it first appears if you have the context.
I haven't finished the sequel, but the writing takes a huge nosedive. The tone is really off and everything is about fucking. I honestly wouldn't let it dissuade you though since the tone and writing for the first is perfectly fine, and the story is self contained.

It was never justified. The whole point was that each of the characters are not who they seem to be and both have things that may make them appear to be good or bad that turn out to be the opposite. I read an LP of it, which is basically the same experience as playing it since it's just a book cut up into pieces and strung around. I recommend you play an LP too.
As for the quality, it has its ups and downs. The plot twists surrounding Hyun-ae are legitimately great and you can really sympathize with her once you figure out what's going on. There were a few moments where things clicked and it gave me that kind of dawning horror that creeps into the back of your mind as I figured out just how fucked up everything was. The actual plot and sequence of events are also solid when you look at the story's basic structure. The society you're looking at is chilling partially because you get to see exactly how it became the way it is, and because it's supposed to be a representation of what Korea was actually like before it got modernized. I legitimately don't think any other game has tried to tackle that kind of touchy historical subject, and to its credit Analog does paint a pretty vivid and nasty picture of a different time.
But it's really badly written at other times. Most of the time the writing's got about as much subtlety as a hammer to the face, especially when it comes to its whole LGBT thing and the points it tries to make. Mute is the only sane person half the time, and your old racist conservative christian grandmother the other half of the time. Whenever it's not about Hyun-ae's plotline, it's so-so at best.
Basically, take it with a grain of salt. Past that veil of unsubtle points and boring "being homophobic is wrong and you should treat women equally" themes you have a great examination of a rarely-visited time period, that seems to have been very well researched and carefully put together into a decent sci-fi story.
So yeah, check out an LP.
