Did the release of Dark Souls III coincide with a rash of head injuries? What the hell happened to this series and its audience?
Invading has never been fair, that's true. Invaders enjoy the benefit of knowledge of the level and, at the very least, a basic understanding of PvP. The host has the ability to heal with Estus, which invaders do not, in Dark Souls I & II.
In the past, invaders had another advantage in form of upgraded equipment. Dark Souls III's system restricts invasions relative to equipment upgrades, so that eliminates a lot of the invader's unfair advantage.
Yet it's incredibly common to see players say that invaders are at fault, that they're all assholes. What about people who suck at PvP want to invade, what about people with balanced builds? Should they be forced to accommodate Dark Souls III's invasion meta of expecting - and being equipped for - the worst at all times?
If you go human, you are willingly inviting the possibility of being invaded. You don't have the right to say that you're being invaded against your will, especially if you're summoning. The fact that "consent" comes up frequently in conversations about DaS III invasions if fucking ridiculous.
DaS III's invasion system should have been:
>No prioritizing players with phantoms over players without phantoms
>Using Dried Finger is the only way you're prioritized over other players
>Neither invaders nor phantoms can use Estus
>Weapon Upgrades and SL limit invasions the way it works now
That's all they had to do, and they fucked it up. Now PvEfags and PvPfags are at each other's throats more than ever. Instead of solving the issues of previous systems, it instead encourages people to become fucking assholes using dirty tricks just to survive invading.
The only good souls PvP on PC is now Dark Souls II

The whole point of this game's invasion system is no fun allowed. Go in, fuck the dude up, ruin his run of that segment. I killed a guy on top of the archive after the gargs, he probably lost 25mins of fighting his way up there. He had a buddy as well, fucked him up before the host in front of him. There is no better feeling. If people feel raped by that they can go back to playing other games, or go offline.
I agree with you op, consent is a missplaced concept in this conversation. On the estus part, I used to hate chuggers but dealing with this is so much easier than it looks. It takes a bit of practice, people will come around that.

What do people get out of invading?
I've played each souls game and been invaded a fair share of times, and either I die and just go get my souls or whatever, or thankfully usually win after some time wasting shenanigans.
Is it fun for some people to just impede other peoples progress through the game? Or is it just that they enjoy the combat and find the AI boring or something. I can understand wanting to fight other people into PvP but invading people just going through the story seems stupid.
Anyway I love how as soon as you get their HP down below a third the invader just pulls the plug or runs off into enemies and hides.

I would agree that FROM does not always prioritize PvP balance in Souls games. They'll nerf stuff that is clearly overtuned, but they commonly leave broken things in their games as well. See Chaos Blade in DSII.

So enjoying invasions, probably one the most unique and dynamic video game mechanics in years, makes you a moron? Fuck off with that. Invasions offer so much longevity to the game, and they're fun as fuck for both the invader and invaded imo.
In regards to organized and "honorable" duels, I would say it is pretty unbalanced. Still, we find the game itself fun enough that we just play around or deal with the broken shit because it's fun."Fun" is the keyword, here.

There needs to be some kind of mechanic incentivizing invaded players to hurry up and get to the fog door or kill the invader. It's too easy for a group of people to just camp out by the bonfire making smores and waiting, and apparently now black crystaling out of people wasting your time like that gets you penalized.

I bitched a little bit at first about invaders being even more disadvantaged than they already were, but I honestly got over that after getting more used to this game's PvP.
Honsetly, invading into a game with a host+phantoms is fun. It's hectic, crazy, and it feels fucking awesome when I pull it off. These hosts and phantoms are usually so shit at PvP anyways, that winning these 3v1's actually isn't that hard.
I prefer this system to be honest: invasions for hectic, fun battles where I have to use my head and the environment to even the odds, and Red Sign Soapstone duels for my "honorable" duels when I feel like having them.
Being able to estus as an invader, even if with less charges, is kind of fucking huge too imo. You're basically granted more chances if you fuck up and lose too much health now.

Pro-tip: get Chameleon and get creative. Many shit players hide behind their 2-3 summons who clear stuff ahead of them. When they lag behind to syphon up loot and drops you can decloak and attack. Most of the time phantoms will assume that everything behind them is "cleared" and not bother to look back.
Works especially well in cluttered areas like Grand Archives.
My theory as to why so many invasions end up vs. gank-squads is that the majority of people who bought the game are just really shit at it and immediately summon an army of phantoms to carry them through the area upon reaching a new level.

That whole area after Sulyvahn is always active at practically every SL post 40. It's extremely popular for people who 1v1s and general invasions.
Other than, I think Irithyll Dungeon, Profaned Capital, and maybe even Irithyll itself are still very active.
Just be prepared to face two or more people at once. Don't be afraid to use enemies and terrain to your advantage if you have to.
Also, Undead Hunter/Duel Talismans are your best friends.

Blue Sentinels need to automatically invade regardless of covenant in the case of Aldrich Faithful and maybe Watchdogs while increasing the chance those two will get co-op invasions (like bellbros), and Mad Phantoms need to be able to spoof their summon sign with the white ring and also enter boss fogs (but be treated like a normal phantom once they enter).

I thought I could adapt to it since I love fighting alone against multiple people. But these invasions are genuinely depressing. Basically every invasion is like this:

It's so bland and unrewarding. I went purple just so I can take victory in killing the phantoms but that doesn't feel like a victory. I love the 1vs3 but estus ruins the pvp completely.

I just invaded some people yesterday in Road of Sacrifices and had a good time.
Most hosts I met had a phantom or sunfag with them but I still had fair fights.
Honestly I like that now invaders when use Estus, because hosts have estus AND can summon up to two other players to help fend off enemies.
Not just that but you can completely avoid invasions by not using Embers. So if you get invaded you shouldnt be surprised.

Don't have Dark Souls 3 yet, is the Moonlight Greatsword available on a first playthrough? It's always been my favorite weapon and I was super disappointed to find that it was limited to postgame/NG+ in Dark Souls 2.

Completely fair. Enemies are tough but have weaknesses and will punish your mistakes accordingly.

Because of the stomp? What the fuck? The only thing that makes stomps good on great-swords is the range you can pull them off. Even a short-sword has better range and more utility than the Dark Sword due to the easier poke and faster stunlock. Alvira Long Swords out perform Dark Swords in every way. A Raw Alvira will decimate far more than a Heavy Dark Sword. I'm sitting here on 36 tongues being practical, surrounded by wraith memers dying using their trashcan of a gank sword.

I enjoy fighting other players, and being able to invade almost anywhere in the game creates a lot of really fun and interesting situations.
I find 1 on 1 flat arena type combat boring so the diverse environments and potential enemies/giant seed and stuff like chameleon shenanigans makes it incredibly fun for me.

It's not just the damage that I've seen, it's the idiots that run in, get hit hard and panic, only to get totally fucked by the range of their 360 sweep six consecutive slash combo. My right hand has Estoc and great machete or great axe, left hand has a parry shield and it's a great combo. Hornet ring crits with the high damage str weapons will one shot tons of people I invade. If you want to practice parrying you can do it on the black knights that spawn after the champion, once you get good at that start dueling people with a focus on parrying. You'll lose fights you could win but the payoff is great, being able to wreck a phantom with a parry and make a 2v1 or 1v1 is crucial if you want to get good at invading. I hadn't been parrying much until some guy I invaded destroyed me with two clutch Estoc parries, I decided I needed to learn this ifvi wanted to win more. Nothing like going to a fight club, no one knows you have that high damage weapon, and then killing a guy from full health with the weapon switch.

Purples are the ultimate summon, if you get tired of somebody being a dick you can just kill them, or if they just stand around idle.

This is the first DaS game I've invaded in and I think it's fine the way it is, it shouldn't be regular PvP. The invader needs to use nap knowledge and the enemies in the area to ambush and wear down the host, that's what makes it far better than the arena, it's a hunt, not a duel.

Not with the gank squads though. Phantom has to play smart, stay hidden, use the NPCs, and strike in a way that lets him take out the Host's phantoms.
There should also be penalization for disconnecting, something like being unable to summon phantoms for a set number of hours after disconnection from the internet. MAYBE the host shouldn't be able to go through the fog wall until the phantom is dealt with. That honestly seems like too much bullshit though. Maybe put a timer or something on it. IDK.
