Runescape is Ultima-lite-lite. It's directly inspired by it, but the similarities pretty much end with the classless character advancement, full-loot pvp zones and sandbox-ish world. It's a decent game, considering it's age, but you'd be mad to get into it now, you'll basically never catch up to the top players.

I don't know if it's still the same way, but Runescape was one of the only mmos that wasn't about "maxing out". There were very few people who managed to get max level, but you could experience the whole game before it. It was a very social and sandbox kind of game, and the richest player I knew was only level 83 (max was 126 i believe).

I disagree. Every activity Runescape had was tied to xp rewards in one way or another. Xp and gold is the driving force behind everything in Runescape - you earn xp to earn more gold, you use the gold to earn even more xp and so on.

That depends on the person but as always there's f2p, so if you want to look at see what its become there's not really anything to lose. RS3 has killed PvP, but it does everything else better than OSRS. Also there's an actual plot now but nobody really cares. It is kind of fun to actually interact with the "gods" since they've returned and always used to be mysterious and distant.

Pretty much, The game's consistently proven that its better than any mmo on the market in terms of content and gameplay. Download the new client, anon. Give it a whirl.
For those curious what NXT is:
- larger zones (increased from 104x104 to 408x408)
- new cache format allowing faster read times, faster zone loading
- larger view distance (you can stand on one side of Varrock and see the other side now)
- increased texture resolutions
- hud is much more responsive
The cache format change broke any cache-centric bot, ditching Java broke every injection, reflection, or agent bot, and the texture changes broke every color bot.
Just downloaded the new client, definitely one of the best MMORPG's i've played in a while. The graphics are just so stellar now, its impossible to put the controller down. Who else is playing Runescape?

No offense anon but how would you know what the current player base is like if you don't currently play the game? New players are pretty rare, the majority of people are maxed or near maxed and most of the end game content is geared towards people that have been playing for quite some time.
