It's something new and exciting. 99% of all other games are just evolutions of other games in terms of gameplay mechanics. Also Souls games are 20-40 hours if you just do the main story.
But let's stick to the topic. The Souls series is an excellent example of a small studio making an amazing game with a low budget.
