>install bunch of games
>no decrease in load times or performance

Are SSDs the ultimate meme?
>>
>>334802950
retard
>>
Depends on the game. Barely any difference in BF4, but it cuts TW3 load times from 40 seconds to 4 seconds.
>>
It's your own fault for not understanding what the role of a secondary storage device is in the loading of games.
>>
The problem is you and your worthless life
being PC gamer razor fag in 2016
>>
>>334802950
Learn how and what your games are loading, and why.

An SSD isn't going to make your GPU preload shaders, lightmaps, and what the fuck else ever.

An SSD will make reading/writing saves, reading audio, and loading map data extremely fast.
>>
I skipped an SSD and got another 8gb of memory. The worst load times are the first ones. Once a game is loaded, the next time I load it, its very fast. I don't mind the initial 30 seconds. Sub-TB harddrives, no ty.
>>
Total War Attila is literally unplayable without an SSD.
>>
>>334802950
I use it for FFXIV and Fallout 4 its pretty fucking useful tbqfh
>>
>>334802950
You really need SSD's for games that have to load massive amounts of files. TW3, GTA V and Fallout 4 come to mind as games that give you massive load time improvements on a SSD.

In addition Grand Stategy Games ( Total War, Civilization, Europa Universalis, Crusader Kings ) really benefit from one due to the amount of data being saved, written and loaded.

Finally, having the OS on a SSD allows you to boot your computer at lightning speeds ( 6-12 seconds ) which is always nice.
>>
Depends on the game and what it's loading.

I bought mine for the OS and that alone was worth it. Fantastic bootspeeds.

Also chucked Killing Floor 2 on there for a laugh, which loads very quickly.
>>
>using it with sata2 motherboard
why no speed increase?
>>
>>334804117

Enjoy your sluggish operating system and programs, peasant.
>>
>>334804841
Cold boot to desktop is 30~ seconds. Cold boot to browser open is 45. Cold boot to Witcher 3 in-game is about 3 1/2 minutes. Maybe Sims 3 would benefit, but thats still not worth the price tag / low storage / higher failure rate of SSDs.
>>
>still a bunch of stupid fuckers thinking SSDs are a meme

One of the best things you can buy for your PC
>>
So basically SSDs are only good for mmos, third person games, and shooters?
>>
>>334805489
Yeah, pretty much the three most popular video game genres.
>>
http://www.samsung.com/global/business/semiconductor/minisite/SSD/global/html/ssd950pro/overview.html

I'm going for this meme.

also, i'd steer clear of regular samsung SSD's in 2.5 formfactor, my 840 EVO 1TB ssd is dying from crippling performance issues affecting the entire system.
>>
>>334802950
>>no decrease in load times or performance
what games are you trying?
Fallout 4 is practically unplayable without being installed on an SSD.
if a game is loading at the same speed, the bottleneck on the load time isn't the drive.
>>
>it's a "my SSD didn't not make my gaem faster!" episode

Your computer does more than just play games. SSD's are great for load times, write speed, multi-tasking etc

High failure rate is a meme.

No moving parts vs moving parts

hmm, which will have the higher failure rate?
>>
>>334802950
You're the ultimate fucking retard.
Stop posting permanently and then kill yourself.
>>
>>334803016
Does it improve stuttering in Novigrad?
>>
>>334802950
>no decrease in load times or performance

Why would you tell lies on the internet? Go search SSD vs HDD load times on youtube or Google.

As for performance, why would you think an SSD improves performance? No one has ever said this.
>>
>>334805120
>Maybe Sims 3 would benefit, but thats still not worth the price tag / low storage / higher failure rate of SSDs.
Please consider suicide. You clearly are fucking retarded and should be purged from humanity
>>
>>334805726
depends on which brand of SSD you get and which memory controller they use.

like the samsung EVO series has a 70% failure rate due to bad algorithms in file storage.

you'll lose more than 60% of the performance speed after 8 days of using the SSD. (once the problem first has started, if you reformat/rewrite the disc, after 8 days it'll be back to shit performance)
>>
SSD improves loading times and do not translate to an increase in performance (FPS), the only place where you might get an increase in performance is for games that use procedural loading (openworld and MMOs).
>>
>>334805726
SSD usefulness in order is
1. OS
2. Editing software (i.e photoshop, video editors, etc)
3. Web Browsers
4. Vidya

Also modern SSDs last literal decades, they're far outdated before they die
>>
cuts load times by maybe 75%
of course, most people that consider an SSD already have a pretty tight PC, so we're talking shit like reducing a load time of 30 seconds to like 5 seconds, so whether that means anything huge is really up to you
>>
>>334805826
Its a good example of a game with insane loading times.

Sage hasn't worked in ages you fucking moron.
>>
So whats the point of an HDD then if you can just put everything on an SSD?
>>
>>334802950
I bought a Samsung SSD and it got half the fucking advertised read/write speeds it was supposed to. I eventually dumped it and got a Crucial.

Even then the Samsung still cut my startup times by 75%.
>>
>>334806176
uh huh keep believing that
>>
>>334806262
>Unironically retarded
>>
>>334804117
yesterday i had to use a computer without an SSD after having mine for over a year.

i forgot how fucking awful it was.

that 30 second wait before all startup programs finish loading to make system usable

that half a second delay after clicking on anything,

it took like 10 second to open the browser.

never again
>>
>>334806223
HDD is good for mass storage and backups when you're not running it 24/7
>>
>>334806284

>>
>>334802950
>not having couple SSD in RAID 0 array to make them even faster

gotta go fast
>>
>>334806868
Most are not optimized for raid 0 and it can cause drive failure.
>>
i have samsung 830 and 840, both work fine.

motherboards can do TRIM on ssd raids now , so that's not a problem anymore if that's what you ment
>>
>>334807350
the 840 had an issue where read speeds would degrade the longer it's been since the data was written to it.
The issue was supposedly fixed, but it may only be by rewriting the data from time to time, ending in a shorter lifetime.

However even with that, the SSD will last ages.
My 840 EVO was pretty expensive when I got it, but a different 256GB SSD right now wouldn't be expensive at all, and by the time I get my next SSD I'll get something even bigger for cheaper.
>>
>>334806252
could be your motherboard is older and has slower sata2 connectors instead of sata3
>>
You didn't buy shit, you're just fucking retarded.

And if you did buy it, you know fuck all about computing.

SSDs aren't a meme, they're legit good. You're just a fucking moron.

Kys you dumb reddit poster.
>>
Is this the new "we can't see past 30 FPS anyway"?
>>
>>334806223
HDDs have more storage space for now, but Samsung recently released 16TB SDDs for enterprise. When those hit the market and are reasonably priced/affordable, there will be no point to HDDs anymore and they'll be phased out.

Same way the disk drive outphased the floppy drive, and how flash memory is phasing out disk drives. As new tech is developed, other tech starts to become obsolete.

As it is now, you really don't need a regular HDD anyway. Most people have 2TB external drives anyway, as well as the cloud. A 128gig SDD is more than enough.
>>
>>334807496
mine are working fine
830 for over a year, 840 for 4 months

have you used samsung magician?
it's sn official samsung program to setup and test ssd to make sure everything is working as it should.
>>
>>334807619
Who needs less than 30 second load times anyway?
>>
>no decrease in load times or performance
Load times depend entirely on the game.
There should be no decrease in performance.
>>
It does make things a bit nippier, but not always noticeably so. You only really see the difference it makes in side by comparisons so it doesn't improve quality of life as dramatically as people make out. Hardly worth the price tag.

Handy for virtualisation though.
>>
Installed FO4 on my SSD, it was like a new game, except the actually game itself, I mean that's irredeemable garbage but it loaded fast.
>>
>>334807886
cloud relies on internet connectivity

it aint free to connect to that not even with a one time fee like just purchasing storage hardware

also hdds are cheap and one can never have too much space

Only way to see if your 840 is fucked up, is via HDTune.
Samsung Magician and all other benchmarks showed the drive as totally ok, when the reads and writes in reality were somewhere along 5MB/s at worst.
But if you have the latest firmware, then everything should be fine.

I have two 840s and the firmware problem was very real with both of them.
After two firmware updates, it did sort of fix the problem.
>>
>>334803016
I had huge improvement in BF4. from like 45 seconds to 12 to load an average map.

also do you have over-provisioning

i remember reading these two things could make ssd slower over time
>>
>>334809019
http://gizmodo.com/samsungs-16tb-ssd-is-now-an-actual-thing-people-can-buy-1762536707

HDDs can't do 16TB. Expect this to drop in price considerably over the next 4 years.

When SDDs are outdoing HDDs for the same price, they'll make HDDs totally obsolete.
>>
I've managed to convince everyone I know who wanted an ssd to trash the idea. Ssd's are the biggest meme. My pc boots up in 11 seconds using msi fast boot and I'm sure there are free bios mods that can allow other people to do the same. Also games are so massive now at like 50gb per AAA title that you'll only be able to put about 3 games on a standard, cheap 120gb ssd.
>>
What games did you install on it? You should probably have a basic idea of how computers work before you try to decide which games will benefit from an SSD and which will not.
>>
>>334808470
You're just baiting but if anyone else has a similar problem most respectable brands will replace it for free.

>>
>>334809908

This had nothing to do with those things.
The whole 840 line was fucked right from the beginning.

Everything was fine for some time, then reading the old data got slow as shit for everyone.
Then Samsung applied the first fix, it worked for a little while, then the drives slowed down again.
After some time they realized that there's a fundamental problem and applied a new firmware update, which basically constantly refreshes your data on the background.
If you don't have the EXT0DB6Q firmware, then your drive is fucked when it comes to reading the old data, even if most benchmarks show it as just fine.

Yes high resolution is needed for VR, but as VR is at the moment, there's no reason anyone should be buying it. I'm not buying VR because I don't want to spend money on something that's not going to have any games because there's only a very small niche who's gonna spend that kind of money on it and then devs will shy away because there's nobody with VR units and the vicious cycle continues.

4k is still a meme on a regular screen. Don't be a dumb nigger, you only need 1080p for now.

>>
>>334812748
VR has plenty of games, just no notable exclusives. I agree it's not worth buying right now, but anti-shilling is only gonna hurt the development of the product. In a couple years, a decent headset should fall in the affordable range of $200.

You can use VR for all those, but only RPG and FPS really benefit from it. Maybe strategy.
