After visiting dark firelink and speaking to Ludleth, it all comes together.
Ludleth was your predecessor. He linked the fire and that was his firekeeper with the eyes.
the handmaid is the same as the one in our firelink, just at different times.
Why is it dark? Well maybe following the linking of the fire there's a period of dark or some shit who knows. Or perhaps Ludleth had not yet linked the fire by the time you visit the past

The shrine was created to re-link the flame using the souls of cinder when the fire dimmed. The first fire keeper saw a world without the flame and decided to shut down the shrine. This is why fire keepers are now forbidden to have eyes.

I helped a bunch of people with this guy to rank up in the Sunlight Covenant and the main issue I notice is that people either aren't patient enough or mis-time their rolls. I think the Carthus Bloodring is super good for this fight because his combos are pretty rhythmic. Secondly this fight is going to take awhile so just accept that and don't try to rush it. For example if those light orbs are up in the air don't attack until after they shoot them it's not worth getting hit by them for 1-2 hits on the boss.

DaS didn't really have the central story of Artorias going into the Abyss until the DLC, which came way after the game was launched. That story existed before the DLC, but it wasn't central, and was basically just another extension of Gwyn's story.
The central story of DaS was Gwyn's story. You hear a lot about his war against the dragons, his war against the chaos demons, his knights and their journeys, his fear of the flame fading, his linking of the flame. Frampt and Kaathe both don't shut up about him, Gwynevere and Gwyndolin both don't shut up about him. You spend spend more than half the game just tracing Gwyn's steps and seeing what the fuck he did and why he did it, and then you find him as a hollow husk at the end, kill him, and decide to follow in his footsteps or do the opposite.
DaS2 tried to do the same thing with Vendrick, but it was too vague and didn't have the same impact. I believe that's partly due to the writing being less focused, but also because Vendrick isn't the last boss.

I really do like the changes they've made with poise and armor. You can't poise tank hits to get free backstabs. But it also means heavier armors only give you like 10% more damage resistance and you need to dump stats into more load rather than getting an actual tank stat like health or damage stat.
