When it comes to content creation, there is nothing quite like SL. It has its limitations compared to other game engines, but there is nothing even close to it with as many members where you can right click, make a new object, and start scripting it to do whatever you want.

When I was 15 my parents got into this game.
They lost their jobs, stayed in their room all day , and did nothing but play this game everyday for 2 years. My two brothers and myself had to fend for ourselves. My older brother was 19. So he got a job and moved out. Leaving me to have to drop out of highschool and find work under the table to help feed my 11 year old brother at the time.

basically theres 3 types of game assets used for both building and avatar customization (which is conceptually just attaching buildings to yourself)

if you wanna be a cube you can easily just attach a prim, knock yourself out. worth noting that these are the only assets that are completely made "in engine" unless you count screenshots and shit
then theres sculpts which are primitives with a shape defined by a texture map that some mystical 3d program somewhere shits out. these represent more realistic shapes but are hell when it comes to texturing and they usually look like blobs of shit anyways
finally theres actual imported mesh model work which is the only thing that matters. people usually model for this game using blender and figuring out how to rig models to the fucked up avatar skeleton that everyone shares is the endgame of secondlife

What kind of group do you want me to name? I'm not part of many groups that are focused on RP or games, but if you want just activity alone, you have Utilizator's group which is constantly talking about one thing or another.
Game wise, the only one I'm part of is BARE, which does tournaments pretty much weekly and usually has people chatting/asking for games as well.
RP wise, closest I have would be We <3 RP, but thats devoted to the shopping event. However, it does have the occasional discussion about RP and questions on where to find good places and such.
It isn't exactly hard to find active or chatty groups.

Price is less of an issue with Kemono than anything else. There are hundreds of items for under 100L or priced at 25L. Outside of the initial cost to buy the av, its probably the most cost efficient av you can go for in terms of clothes and mods.
