Dark Souls did not change game design. It did not revolutionize the industry. It did not encourage other games to try to copy it. It does not have a shit ton of spin offs. Once the final DLC is released Bandai Namco will no longer publish FROMSOFT games. Kadokawa owns a majority stake in FROMSOFT and wants to publish the games from now on. Kadokawa honored an agreement From made with Bamco a few years back after being paid a lump sum for DS3 but unless Bamco is willing to pay out again this is it for them. Supposedly Sony still has one game left with From but Kadokawa seems to have some odd control over what exactly happens with that one (or possibly two) games.

Fastest selling might not mean best selling or most profitable at all, most AAA games have the bulk of their sales in the launch window. I think people really need to enjoy Dark Souls 3 for what it's worth, and say a bon voyage to the Dark Souls series, because it should end and as far as we know from Miyazaki, it has ended. That doesn't mean I don't want more Bloodborne-esque one offs, where we're introduced into a whole new world with slightly skewed mechanics. In many ways, I loved Bloodborne a lot more than Dark Souls 3 simply because it was so fresh.
