I also love these Games but they are definitely flawed, very niche, and have very weak production values so I don't feel like most people would care for them really
Dead Space 1/2.
Great games barely ever brought up though.
I thought they'd be pretty shit because they were EA games on console but EA hadn't ass fucked the devs at that point.
>>334740794
Gotta go with this.
ZombiU
Yes, it has its flaws, but I got it dirt cheap and after trawling through its slow start I ended up quite liking it once it picked up, it has a certain charm to it that I haven't really seen in other fps/survival-horror games, and I would've loved a sequel or similar game that used the gamepad the ways it did.
>>334741781
Can you imagine if the game sold like 2 million in its first two months, how different things might look today? Or if Mass Effect 3 sold a million on WiiU? What might have been.
>>334741989
Didn't play the Wii U port of ME3, guessing it did some neat shit with the gamepad?
It's a real shame ZombiU suffered from boring cricket-bat controls, and pace-ruining loading (e.g. you were encouraged to store excess gear back at the safehouse, but since you'd have to sit through at least 2 loading screens to do so it felt pointless), as I liked the whole idea of the backpack storage and how they treated it, as well as the gamepad acting as a survival unit/hacking device.

>>334743709
No standards in design and putting the least effort into trying to make the most money is what killed the industry anon. Put it short, the industry killed the industry.
And I'm not saying, "It's about the graphics" because it's 8-bit anon, it's they used ****RETRO**** limitations as an excuse for being bad/lazy artists.
Literally NOBODY ever talks about Nimbus, but it's a really nice game, with lots of content. It even has a section with rejected levels that were broken or too difficult.
>>334742409
No idea, I didn't buy it. Mass Effect 1 was kind of disappointing to me so I never bothered with the sequels.
Just the idea that if EA and Ubisoft found solid success on the console things for Nintendo might be a little different today.
>>334744365
>it's they used ****RETRO**** limitations as an excuse for being bad/lazy artists.
Yes, they did. But, like I said, the game may still be good regardless of its graphics. Good graphics are not mandatory for a game to be good, they are in fact almost always a superfluous detail.

>And I'm not saying, "It's about the graphics" because it's 8-bit anon, it's they used ****RETRO**** limitations as an excuse for being bad/lazy artists.
It's not like the game(as in the experience it provides, its story, its mechanics, its level design, etc) would have been better or more fun if the graphics were made in a different, more detailed, pixel art style?
No.
So as long as the game looks nice in the chosen style, it doesnt matter what's the reson behind said choice.
If i can make pixel art graphics, but not experienced in it enough to go beyond some skill levels, yet i'm still able to make it look good with what i can do, that shouldn't prevent me from making a game just because it would look better if i was more skilled in the graphics compartment.
Also, let's not forget this dude is the same who made the graphics for Binding Of Isaac, so yes, this art syle is indeed a choice, not necessarily imposed by his supposed lack of skills.
>>334740454
1001 spikes
that game is fucking amazing, i couldn't stop talking about it the day i discovered about it, it's one of those "kill the player a lot platformer" but it mostly work by trying to make player fall into hidden traps, and because of that it made the game super tense, not only that it's amazing when you think, "mmm... if i was the guy who designed this level i would do this to fuck over the player" like if there is a safe spot, it's not a safe spot, it's never a safe spot
also the music is fucking amazing, like something one made for a music competition about using the gameboy color chiptunes

10001 spikes starts out really fun, but towards the end of the game it starts relying on some really cheap tricks to waste the player's time. it also starts hitting heavy with really short. ultra-hard levels, when the design would have benefited from having longer levels with tiered checkpoints
still a good game though, it blows shitty 'hard' platformers like super meat boy totally outta the water

100% positive. I can turn on fun mode as easy as booting up Doom, Devil May Cry 3, Warioland 4, Nuclear Throne, etc.
Even if all of these games are flawed, they are still pretty polished and had effort put into them. They weren't soulless and had charm, as well as good game design.
It's just sad when people who don't even know how to code (Nuke Throne) can make an incredibly fun videogame by using sound, art, and game direction. It's not that modern developers can't do this, it's that they don't, because it's easy and you'll buy it anyway.

no i'm going to bed
i never had any problem with the performance and it has the added bonus of having no slowdown and flicker, so if anything it's a lot more performant than the NES games
i found the difficulty to be pretty even throughout. i don't remember any particular areas that were harder than others, although i did play a post-patch version which apparently had some tweaks. some of the levels i found to be much harder than others, though
compared to regular megaman, MMU has marathon-length levels, it's part of the game's design, and i guess it's an issue of personal taste, but i prefer long, moderately hard levels to shorter, harder levels. i never felt like the game deliberately killed me in order to send me back to a checkpoint from 10 minutes ago in the way that, say, 10001 spikes did
and i thought the ending sequence was great

I fucking love the fuck out of Gigantic, although it's not surprising it's not talked about due to W10/Xbone exclusivity. It turns out the easiest way to make a """moba""" fun is to get rid of the overhead perspective with tiny characters, remove the click-to-move nonsense, and turn it into a third person shooter with some great character design and a good overall aesthetic.
They're fucking giving everybody who wants a key one on the ribbit if you want to try an ASSFAGGOTS that's less ASSFAGGOTS and more TPS.

I was pretty disappointed with it honestly, some of the writing was good but the gameplay itself was rather lacking, and the mood system was really clunky. I think I would have preferred it if the gameplay had less to do with skills and more to do with your choices.
Teleglitch was my favourite game of 2014 (that I played) after Dark Souls II and Smash were massive disappointments to me.
Gameplay is fucking stellar and the Gaphics go beyond the standard pixel trash. I couldn't finish it before my Pc died but I put a good 14 hours in and brought the DLC. This game was even given away for free in the Humble Bundle and nobody fucking got it - people brought Nuclear Throne instead which imo is a far worse game.

I had fun turning every battle into a siege using command groups. Had 3 groups of infantry to form a staggered shield wall, 2 wings of archers behind them on a nearby hill if any were available, then a group for companions, who wore the best armor and weapons money could buy and were set to follow me for when I needed to play hero.
If they just charge like AI units do then every infantry based army will lose to a cavalry based army just because they lack mobility.

I literally never saw anyone talking about it. It has pretty good soundtrack (The Ghost Fores and The Guardian are my favorite), variative gameplay and interesting story with many twists. Yeah, it has a lot of flaws, like unbalanced difficulty (earlier levels might be harder), cheesy dialogues and various bugs (gamebreaking ones were fixed quickly though).

Okay, but the OP already said they like it. They are outright stating that they have played it, and think it's a good game. You can decide you don't want to take the chance and try the game, but in this context, it's your word against OP's. And considering you admittedly haven't even played the game, whose opinion do you think I care about? Sure as fuck not yours.
Yes, broadly speaking, judging a book by its cover is a useful, convenient thing to do sometimes. But outright shitting on something as though it's a fact that you know to be true based on complete assumption makes you a retard. Especially considering that your assumption goes completely against real trends - lazy pixelshit games tend to actually have good gameplay. At least in my experience, I dunno, maybe I just happen to pick the right ones.

fucking spiral knights.
An amazing rougelike MMORPG that's kinda like WoW but a lot more fun and quirky, the combat is real time and very well designed, the four bosses are unique and present different gameplay, and each boss features a increased difficulty version for the advanced players, in addition to a very fun story mode that progresses and has a very well made difficulty curve
the only negatives being that it's a bit grindy and the development team has pretty much abandoned the game, and the servers are rather poor, but I've played 757 hours of the game on steam and it's certainly a great game for anyone who like things like the binding of issac

I have a feeling that it won't get a lot of discussion until a Steam Sale makes it dirt cheap. It came out at the perfect time for sales, since a lot of people bought it for the same reason I did, to stave off the Souls hunger, but that also ended up hurting word-of-mouth, since that audience would rather talk about actual Souls news that was trickling out from the Japanese release at the time.

It heavily loses steam though. Big Boner goes on for what seems like ages, the paper SHMUP should not have been more than a stage or two but they made it an entire chapter, and it just felt sort of "eh" in the end. Still liked it though, just not worth the $50 I paid for it.
>>334763326
hope you enjoy it, be aware though the combat will take considerable getting used to because its so unlike any other turn based strategy's combat system. My first game I actually had to turn it down to easy because I was getting rek'd so hard, but then after I wrapped my head around it I was able to beat the game on hard without losing a single battle, which is no easy task.
Units have both strength and armor, and strength is both your hp and attack power. Damage is strength minus armor so you can chip away at their hp if you want but its better to break their armor some then go in for big damage. The risk though in doing this is they'll then hit you for big damage since they're still at full strength. Additionally its like chess where you move one unit then they move one unit (unless one side only has one unit left) so killing an enemy outright can sometimes actually put you at a disadvantage if their other units are still at full strength. Once you understand that mechanic things make a bit more sense.

Game would be so much better if you weren't so fucking gimped in combat compared to enemies. They can deploy 8-infinity units, you only get what, 6 or something? If you could do as many as your opponent, or just slightly less, it would be fair.
>>334756142
This game is fucking awesome, really nails the whole 'fucked up research facility' atmosphere, the total lack of music makes it extremely tense too.
>>334770269
I love that fucking game and must have put at least 1800 hours into it, offline and online. So many shitters had to be carried, though.
Sure wish the 360 version didn't require fucking Gold to play MP or else I might actually play more.
>>334756142
great game by 2 people. graphics are a little too basic for me, and its also too hard (git gud) but yeah, awesome game. surprised by how atmospheric it is, even with those graphics

8-bit retro art is a necessary evil. When it's just a single guy who did the entire game, including art, gameplay, engine, music and sound effects, it's 8-bit pixel art or it's nothing.
I'd much rather have a good game that has pixel art than have no game at all. One day you'll realize not everything is required to be 3D pseudo-realism.

Galaxy Force 2
Bought the 3D classics version of the game off of the 3DS' eshop, having never heard of Galaxy Force before hand. Didn't fucking realize that it was basically Star Fox before Star Fox. Shit, that game is fucking good.
>>334768241
At the start right now, and the story's a lot more engaging compared to the same period in BD
>>334749335
Pretty sure I have this downloaded on my PS3.

fucking An Untitled Story
it's a masterclass in metroidvania design, has a charming aesthetic, isn't afraid to challenge the player, and it's FREE
This series in general. It's so good and well-known yet /v/ hardly ever talks about it.

This.
Just started getting into it recently and still find it strange that there are no generals or anything on it.
That said, wish it was a full blown 3rd person arpg, sort of a Bloodborn meets Wind Walker.
>>334777764
*Waker, obviously.
>>334776819
I remember those generals. Fuck.
It's too bad Elona+ is always in a perpetual state of being untranslated.
>>334764367
KB series precedes HoMM
>>334765527
there are a lot of towns
the only difference is that there is only one hero charter
>>334777867
Nah nigga. Elona+ doesn't need any more translation than it has to be playable. It would be nice but since North Tyris is 100% translated and they use dialogue from that for similar things in South Tyris when they don't have a translation, it works out super well.
>Okay this is the dialogue for that quest where I went down the stairs and killed a bunch of slimes. There are stairs behind this guy, let's go kill everything down there.
The newest area is a bit more difficult. That's really half-finished though so I can be patient.
Also I wouldn't want to lose the translation fuck ups, I love them
>Name twist own arm and slam jabbed!
>>334778148
The strange as fuck South Tyris translation issues are always really... Well. Strange, I guess.
It's been probably over a year since I played last, though. Can't think of any that stick out aside from anything involving the quests down there. Particularly the one with the little sister and the chainsaw had some pretty funny dialogue, IIRC.
>>334740454
Summon Night: Swordcraft Story
>>334770962
I beat it on Insane ironman, yeah the enemies get more units than you most of the time, but they also get lots of trash units in most battles. The main thing to combat is to realize that ranged units are almost completely worthless, support units other than doctors are worthless as well.
If you can grab the crystal skull from xolotl that lets you mind control an enemy things get a lot easier, that's the only way I got through my first playthrough. In subsequent playthroughs though I didn't need it since I knew what classes were good and which were shit, and which encounters were hard so I could save them for later when all my guys were leveled up.
>>334740454
This gem right here. Invokes huge nostalgia as well.
>>334778384
I asked /jp/ why they haven't contacted the Elona+ crew about doing translation work. Those guys love Elona and they all speak moon. They said they have several times but they don't get back to them, I wonder why.
Either way there's a project going on right now called Elona Custom. It's basically Elona+ for English speakers. It does translations and re-adds the massive amounts of story that were lost when it was brought over here. It also adds a few new features like pets being able to craft you gifts with crafting skills that were previously useless on them. I haven't played it but it's apparently the standard now.
>>334778629
Huh. Hadn't heard about Elona Custom. Maybe I'll give it a shot if I end up getting a new PC any time soon. Ol' faithful finally gave out on me.
>>334777764

>>334740975
this
>try to beat every level without dying as I progress
>chapter 4
>FUCK
>drop trying to get deathless
And now I'm stuck on chapter 5, these levels are brutal
>>334768241
The story is generic animu bullshit all through chapter 2 and the final dungeon and encounters leading up to it are completely fucking lackluster in comparison to the original. Doesn't help that the localization sucks and all the grim bits from the side quests were neutered, but there's plenty wrong otherwise
I'm hopingBravely Swordwill be written by someone at least semi-competent.or at least a different combat/leveling system
>>334772535

>>334781034
>with a huge Soma nerf
Soma was a bit crazy at times, but what really needed a change was how mastery worked for the Belmonts.
Yeah, getting like 9999 hits with a subweapon to max it out is totally feasible and fun. Especially for SINGLE HIT FUCKING SUBWEAPONS REEEEEEEE
>>334740794
That is by far the WORST racing game I have ever played, that game plays like someone wanted mario kart but without everything that makes it balanced

But anyway, yeah fuck the sub-weapon mastery. Jonathans had it fucking hard.
No one talks about Super Meat Boy anymore

Pretty much any Belmont had it bad, but Jonathan had even more sub weapons.
Then you had pretty much every other character 200x more common because all they had to do was collect shit. It sucked.

Doom(4)
>>334782419

>>334782194
I don't even know what an Alucard is suppose to do. He just doesn't seem to have any decent gimmicks compared to the rest of the cast.

Thought about it, read a post in which the dev said it's been developed for 4:3 resolutions and changing the aspect ration would just stretch it.
