I think BioWare did an excellent job of romanticizing what Mass Effect was going to be, and the first game sort of touched on it but it had a lot of problems gameplay wise.

Mass Effect 2 then got completely streamlined, any sense of exploring a mysterious new frontier in human history was completely bastardized, and they turned it into another cover-shooter. Although the gameplay was significantly improved, everything that was going to make Mass Effect unique was slaughtered.
