Shovel Knight stands out because it is fairly exemplary in all categories rather than being a cheap knockoff to pander to 8-bit obsessed trenders.
The platforming is tight as fuck and can be challenging - there are options to increase the difficulty further by opting out of checkpoints for more $$$
There are a bunch of power ups, the soundtrack is by Virt and is thus fucking GOAT, the color palette used is extremely vibrant and while it's techinically "8-bit", it is in no way lazy and the character animations and background designs are excellent.
Moreover, the characters and bosses all have distinct personality and there is even a nice little story to boot.
AND, if you didn't like the base game, which comes complete with NG+, Plague of Shadows is completely different with fundamentally changed gameplay. And there are two more of these on the way.
Plus, the game is only 15$ as opposed to 20+ like some other "retro-indie" games.
Shovel Knight is to indie-retro platformers what Metal Slug is to 2D flash shooters on Newgrounds
