Just take a look at Wind Waker. The art style still makes it look good despite the graphical fidelity being quite outdated. That's not to say that all these anime styled games look good in the slightest, but they'd end up looking worse either immediately or further down the line if they dind't.

because attempts at realism like this inevitably age quickly and poorly where as stylised graphics have a much longer shelf life.

Look at something like Zelda Wind Waker and compare it to Twilight Princess. (Gamecube versions though it applies to the HD ones too)

Hardly, considering the aesthetic of the game and the designs of a lot of the NPCs.
Twilight Princess certainly has a darker, less whimsical artstyle than Wind Waker (and that's not a difficult thing to do) but it's certainly nowhere near "realistic" by any stretch of the word.

From what i understand they work from their laptops. The change up will be to drastic biz pipeline wise and wont even be worth it since webs dont like change.

I think TP and Halo as a serie's art style are pretty good examples of making something realistic but having it just be stylized enough to age well.

Halo 3 and TP are obviously old games, but they still look remarkable good at a not shit resolution and I would argue have aged better then the original crysis due to it being slightly stylized.

You do realise this is literally just a model for a statue or a figure, right? It's been modelled in an actual pose instead of T or A pose with limbs stretched out, so it'd probably be hard as fuck to rig or animate.

Look at the amount of detail as well, it's probably sculpted and would have way too many vertices/edges/faces for it to be reasonably rendered and animated in a game. Game models are literally made to be as low-detail as possible with maybe a few edge loops for things like elbows or knuckles bending properly. Everything else is down to textures and lighting.

Look at a sports magazine, every action shot will look fairly goofy.

Granted, both of those are fairly awkward it has nothing to do with the cell shading. You can take a lot of games and freeze frame them at the right moment to make them look awkward.

Cell shading is barely used anymore though. It's mostly all that shitty 3D doll looking stuff that has caught on like your picture. It's been in quite a downfall since the PS2 era. Only Shounen inspired games really even use it now.

Which is a shame since it looks very damn good with todays tech.

Pixel games in the past usually took less than 9 months. Modern HD 3D games takes at least 2 years most take about 3 to 4 years of development or a massive team of artists.

Most people see it as cartoonish, and therefore for kids. A realistic artstyle is more "mature".

Shit sucks, but as long as this is the norm most developers won't take a risk in making games with alternate graphics.

Because 3D models style and cell shading are two completely different things and don`t cancel each other maybe?!

Cell shading is a render method(a way to paint/draw things) and not a way to sculpt a 3D model.

In order to reach Anime looking graphics you need a 3D model that was sculpt to look like an anime AND the cell shading render method to color the model in the proper anime way.

Otherwise,you gonna have some creepy looking character like Star ocean or XCX.
