Take it slow. The game doesn't hold your hand so you'll have to figure a lot of stuff out for yourself. Look around you, see if there's some way you can use the environment to your advantage.
Don't try to take on several enemies at once. You'll get raped. Even the first few mobs are deadly in small numbers.
Learn to dodge and keep your shield up.
Always upgrade your weapons when you can.
Oh and if you run into skeletons early in the game, you're going the wrong way!

Just hit every chest, if it tries to eat you, it's a mimic. I don't think they implemented the penalization for whacking chests until DaS2.

Well it's not the first SOULS games but it was okay.. in my opinion the only improvments they made in 2 and 3 were graphics. Demons Souls had the best story, I had more fun with it than the others.

Starting choices don't matter much. You can find all starting items somewhere in the game. I'd recommend not taking the master key on your first run though because it breaks up the flow of the game if you're a newcomer.

Watch your equipment load. Your run speed gets slower and your rolls get shitty once you exceed 50% of your capacity.
When the crestfallen warrior talks about the bell down below, he means blighttown not new londo ruins.
You can kindle bonfires with a humanity to give you 10 estus instead of 5 when you rest there.
Make sure you upgrade your weapon whenever you can. It's more important than levels.

how do i "properly" level in DaSII? do i just dump 40 immediately into STR or DEX? i've always leveled both simultaneously in all other souls games, along with some HP and END. i'm thinking of starting it RIGHT now
