I first bought a psp-1000 in '07 and switched to psp-2000. Portable gaming was fun for the first 2 games but there's no real advantage over playing with a monitor or tv. Lots of it's games are already available on console too. I even flashed it to a cfw and played some gba games but the screen was quite small and too low. I gave an other try with the 3ds xl and it was night and day in term of games and comfort.

In pirating your stealing a potential profit from a creator or owner.
In emulation your downloading a game that cannot make a profit and isn't being sold by its creator or owner. For example like Game Gear or PS1etc.

Had some great games on it, but the battery life was god awful and the controls were often very shit and hard to use. I liked mine, but it was far from perfect. It had maybe 7 good games on it. Wasn't really worth having. Same story for the Vita.
I remember watching the Spider-Man 2 on my PSP-1K and admiring how beautiful the screen was back in the day.
Then I dusted it off a month ago to replay some shit Vita doesn't have access to (sup Lumines) and dear fucking lord, screen technology ages bad.
I like it, but it never reached the potential it was advertised. Kind of like the rest of the Sony product, if you think about it. I actually kept it legit because I trusted Sony, but the Skype support went out the window in two years, digital comic was underwhelming and overpriced, and the thumbstick was so weak that I replaced it three times. I did in the end get CFK on it after Sony cut support of it in favor of Vita, and now it's my most used handheld with great homebrew programs and emulations next to my phone.

GOs screen is pretty much fantastic. Possibly the best of the PSP line.
It emulates PSX amazingly, better looking on PSP then the Vita. However remember it only has 1 analog, no L3/R3, no L2/R2 does make some games unplayable (don't even try MM Legends). Lots of games work fine otherwise.

the secondary reason is that when you drop them, the disc goes flying away from the case anyway

It wasn't the portable PS2 that I wanted back in 2004, but it had a few of its own great games after a few years and became a sweet portable emulator.
It had some good games, but the disc drive was noisy as fuck.
I've had mine for years and never played a psp game in my life, just use it as a emulator machine. Use much more often then my 3ds, what shitty library.
It's the only place to play Silent Hill Origins. Shut up. I like it.

My first console that i bought with work money back in 2008.
The psp was and is great. Many excellent exclusives, up-ports from DS games always had cool extras and multiplayer games were a blast to play with friends via ad-hoc.
My history with the psp is as follows:

the snes itself is pretty slow, but it's got pretty hard timing requirements for some shit to work which pushes the specs needed to emulate it up
and then anything that uses the DSP chips or whatever needs even more power to emulate
and then the tiny handful of SA-1 games need a decent bit of power because it's actually fast, same thing with the SuperFX
you can do a pretty fast emulator for the SNES on something as slow as a PSP, but a ton of shit will break or flicker or whatever, accuracy ends up being sub-ZSNES level

It had a very small library of games I personally had any interest in, but I still got over 1000 hours just from Monster Hunter and Tactics Ogre.
Never owned one, don't give a shit about piracy, played a couple games on a friend's so I've experiences UMDs and do not miss them, bought a Vita and can get almost any PSP game I want on PSN with customizable controls and a second stick for camera. On the hierarchy of things I do not regret, skipping the PSP is pretty high on the list.

As a whole it was a great foil to the DS and kept Nintendo honest about its offerings.
As far as hardware goes, UMD was initially a good idea as an upgrade to the minidisc. The way they went for a flip open loan instead of that tight slot load MDs had was retarded. Even 3000 models suffer from drive door issues after more than a few months of use. The dimepad is a decent idea, but dumb in practice since it is a grime magnet. Other than the proprietary memory cards, all of the hardware complaints are addressed with the Vita.
As far as software goes, the system is where sleeper hits go to die. Pic related. Once the system got cracked, developers dropped the system like a bad habit and the only thing it received for its last few years of production were low-grade PS2 JRPG ports.
Retailers never really respected the system and were loathe to give the thing shelf space.
The real shame is how the Vita fixed nearly all the mistakes outside of the cards and shitty retailer handling, but Sony refused to support it.
