The seeds were sown well before that. Demon's Souls won GOTY from Gamespot of all places, and Dark Souls on 360 brought the series to people who otherwise would never have played any Souls/King's Field titles. PC getting the game was merely a cherry topping for it all.

Halo killed itself. CoD didn't take away from Halo's popularity, it was just ten times more successful than Halo ever was, and someone saw that and wanted to expand Halo's audience to capture that massive new CoD audience.
It's the biggest problem killing games right now, the market has grown immensely but nobody is satisfied just selling to the same customers they already have, they think that because the market is bigger they should still be selling to the same percentage of it.

Halo died off because normies simply had their fill of it. Dedicated fans can play the same game for 20 years but the average gamer moves on and gets tired of something after a few games, even if it hasn't changed for the worse. Halo's popularity started waning during Halo 3, which was the high point of the series in terms of online gameplay. CoD4 was just in the right place at right time to give normies something similar but new, and it had good enough gameplay to fill the role.
