By being Dragonborn you pretty much have the right to it. More so than the Empire which, technically, you are also fit to lead since there is no longer royal blood on the throne. Certainly more than Ulfric who disgraced his peoples teachings by dishonoring the greybeards.
A lot of people forget that. Despite all his bravado about being a true Nord, he disgraced the Greybeards themselves, which is a hell of a cultural crime.

It's just that everything you do in this game feels inconsequential. You're a member of a faction that asks you to retrieve this ancient crown that supposedly instills huge respect on whoever is wearing it, to the point that you'd have the chance to become king with it, but all you can do is deliver the crown or forget it in your pocket, or on your head I guess, since nobody seems to care anyway
I think the biggest offender in this regard is the Dark Brotherhood questline. You end up killing the fukken Emperor himself, but what happens then? Nothing, you kill an imperial officer that was hunting you down and then the world forgets about it. I mean, Skyrim was going through a crisis because of the lack of a king but the lack of the more globally-relevant emperor doesn't shake anyone up?

literally the only way to get any kind of good roleplay going in Skyrim is to mod it out the ass, so that the guild quests actually require proficiency in their area of expertise, and that the NPCs recognize your accomplishments.

I agree. Specially if you are a melee fighter. It's baskically slashing like a motherfucker for like 30+ hours. But it's not that there are games with far better combat mechanics. Some people for example says that dark souls has far better gameplay when they just dodge and attack and repeat for the same amount of time. No, indark souls the enemies makes it more difficult and challenging, making a win far more enjoyable. In Skyrim, enemies are crap an same which makes it boring in the end. If Skyrim had more diversity like climbing enemies or ambushers and/or sneak enemies, it would be better. But oh well, the engine can't handle that. So be it.
