Do you think it would be possible for someone to make, if given enough resources, a LOTR RPG that truly captured the magic and feeling of Middle Earth?

I can't see it happening, this industry is too shit.
>>
It would just have all the garbage other open world rpgs have, so no.

I'm not saying it's likely but people have done ambitious shit before that goes against the grain.

Hell, even now you have Daniel Vavra making a historical RPG with no magic whatsoever set during the events leading up to the Hussite Wars in the medieval Kingdom of Bohemia.

The industry is indeed shit but it nonetheless can on rare occassions have surprisingly fresh, new and bold ideas that get made into games.

They already tried years ago.

It was called The White Council (or working title Project Gray Company) but it was put on indefinite hold and silently cancelled.

No, for the same reasons why movies never can capture the feel of a book.
>>
>>334571261
Middle Earth is portrayed as a vast world, which is one of it's charms. A lot of time is spent with the characters just traveling between places. In a game this means large (albeit pretty) stretches of land with nothing in them. So you will spend most of the game just walking to places, the map will be nerfed or you'll just fast travel everywhere. The first of these wouldn't be good in a game, and the other two takes away from the feeling of Middle Earth. It may be possible to have a game in just one of the regions, but that wouldn't be a Middle Earth game anymore.

>No, for the same reasons why movies never can capture the feel of a book.

But the LOTR movies did a pretty good job.
>>
>>334572171
Unfortunately The Hobbit movies sort of proved that was either a fluke or just plain unable to be reproduced
>>
>>334572171
3 movies + infinite budjet and they did a pretty decent job. A videogame would be too restricting and would ruin the athmosphrere of the lore. See LOTRO.

Maybe you could make a huge landscape to traverse that would still be enjoyable if, say, along roads you had random encounters generated, both handcrafted and procedural. It would be cool especially if it wasn't all combat shit, just little mundane things like a man visiting relatives in Bree who wants you to scout the road ahead for him or something.

Plus if you added (very light) survival mechanics, it would make exploring the hinterlands more exciting. Imagine trying to keep warm during a snowstorm while you explore mountain passes in the Misty Mountains.

LotRO was pretty good.

no. the scope and magnitude of such a thing is impossible in today's industry. you give players a gigantic world to play in and they'll only explore wherever the quest markers take them.

I think Dark Souls captures some of the atmosphere of, like, the mines of moria and whatnot.

one more. But it's skyrim.
>>
>>334571261
It could work with CD Projekt RED as devs maybe.
But we need even bigger draw distances and better LOD than we have right now I think.
>>
LOTRO did this pretty well. I was a founder and the first year was comparable to my vanilla WoW experience
>>
>>334577772
Is that game still up and running? Does it have any semblance of a population?
>>
>>334577836
It still up. I actually ran around the human starting zone the other week and there were people running around leveling up. I think Brandywine is the most populated server, I would guess that the others are pretty dead so avoid them and do a bit of asking around to make sure Brandy is actually the "go to" server. Also its f2p to start up with so its not like you have anything to lose, the community there is the best I've experienced in any mmo I've ever played and quite sure that still stands today
>>
>>334578165
I thought it was a super limited F2P. I haven't checked in years though
>>
>>334571261
>a LOTR RPG that truly captured the magic and feeling of Middle Earth?
I find that very unlikely to happen. I think most people today, consumers and game developers alike are pretty blind and ignorant to what made the settings so charming in the first place, look for very different types of stories and very different types of messages, and very likely for mechanical experiences that would not be well conductive to such an attempt.
And finally, The Middle Earth is just a massive bite to take. It's huge. Even if you restrained the settings somewhat, even if you limited the player space to say, small part of Gondor, it's still going to be mindbogglingly huge: Middle Earth does not work well when pushed under the "potato-transformation", it does not work well when you cartoonishly exaggerate or transform it.
>>
>>334578423
No idea what F2P LOTRO is like but I don't think its super limited until you get to end-game which by then you will already know if its worth your money or not. The end-game raiding was great, don't remember what the dungeons were called. Mines of Moria was so well done and the raids got even better
>>
>>334577836
Depends on server, most servers are dead, some are still active.
It's f2p now, but the story is free and if you can find a physical version or code of the Moria expansion I think you also get some cash shop currency so you can buy a few regions to get your from the shire to the end of moria without endless grinding.

If you'd want to try it, try the free version first though to see how you like it.

Its like faggot OP never heard of lotro.
>>
>>334572171
No they don't.
They aren't bad - far from it - but they don't really capture the feel of the books.
>>
>>334578423
ftp is ok, but you kind of run out of turbine points pretty quick buying up new areas. You really need to buy an expansion that comes with the currency and also pay for a month so that you perminatly unlock some things like inventory.

The worst part about the game is how easy they have made most of the areas now so that they are quick to complete and can be solo'd.

Yeah, I thought it captured the world, setting and general feel pretty well. Too bad the gameplay kind of sucked.

I kinda miss being ambushed and followed by a gang of minstrels though, improvising a theme song based on whatever I happened to be doing at the time.

it would take a lot of boredom and retarded songs to achieve

I know it wasn't an rpg but the Fellowship of the Ring game was based on the book and it captured its atmosphere pretty well
