I figured what was missing is the momentum you had in older Doom games (i.e. move in one direction, stop input, character continues to slow down but is still moving) which makes it feel sluggish.
Also, it's ironic that they have a "bunny hopper" achievement when you actually can't bunny hop properly.

I have been having a blast in the beta during the past few days. The movement and mobility are just right, as are the weapons. The only real issue I have is the fact that Revenant's attacks are so powerful, that they pretty much instagib anyone they hit.

CA, Harvester and Freezetag are all from either Q3 or Q3TA and they're not common gamemodes so you're just deluding yourself if you think that it's an accident. Not disagreeing that MP is tacked on, but it's pretty clear the goal for Certain Affinity was adapting Quake for consoles given all the gamemodes, half of the weapons and a large chunk of the map design philosophy is identical.

Loadouts -> weapon switching is one button to avoid players having to cycle weapons during matches, console players can now combo
Maps aren't made for strafe jump/strafe jump isn't in -> Quake's original mapsets weren't made for it to begin with (The devs didn't use sj) and console players would have difficulty bunnyhopping with controllers
Movement is slow-ish (it feels around UT4 levels at 110 FOV) -> Console players can't track properly with controllers, everyone moving at breakneck speed all the time would make them impossible to hit
No rocket jumping -> Another method of movement that takes quick, precise movements to use well. Instead, now you have double jump and mantling.

If they understand how quake works now, than why go to the original maps, that never had any of the mechanics in mind, as their template? That is quite a stretch you are going for. They could use refined maps that have been tested through the quake community for years.

Yet that is the point of quake, fast movement precise hits.

I'm really conflicted, I actually like the game, if it wasn't called DOOM I would really love it, however this is too fucking slow for a DOOM game. As in as far as generic FPS games go I really like it, but as a classic arena shooter it's pretty subpar, and only two fucking weapons slots goddamn.

Shame about the fucking RPG elements and weapon drops and items and shit, if all that stuff was purely cosmetic I wouldn't mind as much, but so far I've unlocked my main alt weapon at level 10, so lvl1 players are going to be fucked over.
