That's basically one of two ways to win in civ5.
Domination and Space Race are the only real win conditions that don't involve a serious amount of busy work and hoop jumping.

the goal in multiplayer isn't to win in the modern/information era, it's to alert everyone you are in the best position to win by that era(typically by the renaissance) by which time they disconnect
even with close friends that's just the way this game turns out, if it weren't for their shackled existence the AI would give up too, and the main reason I use the CBT is to try and turn down the snowballing

Is you look even remotely close to have a advantage over the others you get gang raped by everyone. you HAVE to lay low and wait till you have some big ass cities with forts and shit, a somewhat decent army (that also can make you get gang raped if you make it too fast) or have the resources to get an army FAST
