Fallout 4 let's you chose from many kinds of stringer ammo too bad they mostly striped the feature away from new vegas, hopefully mods will fix it

Yes this is mostly a console thing Controller thing but even with the keyboard it pays to be Conservative with a number of button to use.

Large game, elk and such. They get around certain hunting laws like the east coast USA where hunting with rifles is normally banned due to how small the land area is between forests and buildings. The slugs don't go as far as a rifle bullet will but they're still more than enough to take down an elk at 200 yards.

Some shotguns have rifled barrels made specifically for slugs. At those ranges a rifle would be more accurate but with a good shotgun and quality ammo it would be doable. I personally wouldn't try much further than a 100 yard shot for morale/clean kill reasons. It's awful to get a gut shot and it take you forty minutes to track it down where it finally just bled out instead of killing it instantly with a heart shot or something.
