It's not bad when it's one-on-one, it gets annoying when you are fighting two or three people at once and one of them keeps jumping in with it. They are pretty much guaranteed three hits if they land the first one.
I use that weapon for PVE.
Never thought about using it for PVP though, every time someone invades me or I get summoned as blue, I switch to the Estoc, that shit fucks people up.

I loved it in DS2, it was my go to weapon in a Dark build I used to run.
In DS 3 PvE it's okay. Problem is it's slow, and it seems slower than DS / DS 2, the initial hit is fine, but the next hit seems to come slower which usually causes you to take damage from a boss. The damage is still good enough in Co-Op or single just to get away with a single hit.
In PvP it's just bad. The longsword hits just as hard, breaks poise just like everything else but hits way faster, quicker, and has about the same range.
The game right now in PvP is built around Swords, Katanas, and the Farron Greatsword. Some of the gimmick weapons have special abilities that make them somewhat viable.

why not both? I feel like I recover faster from rolling than I do from blocking, but it's faster to pull up a shield than start a roll. so if you're too late to dodge then block and if you can dodge on time then you can punish earlier for longer.

Pure mage is viable, I'm running one now and it's doing great.
I hope you like the rapier though unless you plan on leveling up str/dex. Not a bad weapon, but it may feel a little wimpy early on. You could also try the crystal sage rapier which I've heard is decent.
Also being a mage you get some of the best tools to counter a gank.

The guy in the video is like level 50 something and has 9 VIG, and he's not using any melee so being close just puts him at a disadvantage, and half of those fights were against multiple people so even if he wasn't a mage fighting it head on would be stupid.
I know its a scrub tactic, but the main reason I linked it is to show magics damage is fine, and also that guy has decent free aim skills.
As far as I can tell the laser has infinite range so you potentially one shot people. Combine it with spook and you could stealth one shot people. Obviously I wouldn't do this in a duel or something, but the invaders are at a major disadvantage, and gank squads are every where.

I think Soul Greatsword is getting a buff in the next patch along with the Farron Flash Sword.
I'd recommend using the rapier and sticking to missile type spells. Once you get to the later areas and you run into gank squads the magic will help you out a lot more than your broad sword.
Also I'm not sure what your class is, but if you started as pyro I would recommend the Astora Straight Sword over the broad sword because it has a higher base damage and will work better with flat damage infusions. It also has a better moveset and longer reach.

As someone who was a shitter who cheesed greatshield + havel's to get through DaS1, and was forced to git gud to complete Bloodborne, shields are a horrendously inefficient way to use stamina until you get the ones with ridiculously high stability late in the game.
Stamina management is an argument against shields, not for. Dodging a boss attack uses at most a third of the stamina required to block. DaS3 got easier for me when I shoved my starting shield in my inventory and went fulltime 2h.
I dont begrudge shieldies but cmon.
