In Japan, the series started to decline in sales when Symphonia came out.
Tales was averaging about, 750K units sold, when you count the first four (ToP, ToD, ToE, and ToD2, with ToD and ToD2 ending up in the 900K range).
Then Symphonia came out and only hit about, half of what the previous games were selling, which is why they had to hurriedly port it back to the PS2.
Every game since ToS has sold steadily less, or equal at best, until you hit the strange spike that ToX brought, where it climbed up to similar sales of the early days.
As much as I do like this series, even I am sort of surprised that it hasn't collapsed in on itself yet. People cry doomsday every single time a new game comes out, or every single time a "big event" happens (like Team Destiny and Team Symphonia being merged together, or when Namco closed the doors on Tales Studio.)
And despite all of that, the series has still chugged along just fine. It gets all sorts of events and coverage, and conventions, and magazines, and special shit dedicated just to the series/franchise as a whole, so I doubt the real danger to Tales is exceedingly slim.

Mostly everything related to gameplay. Battle system and skill/equipment system were all shit and objectively worse many recent Tales games. Due to their misguided attempt at making the world more open a lot of areas were empty and felt pretty lifeless. This was in a way true for Xillia as well, with the maps between towns being mostly uninteresting and empty plains like some low budget mmorpg, but Zestiria is still a little better in that regard. The story was pretty bad, even by Tales standards, but I guess that is more subjective.

Combat oh fuck the combat, its just shitty button spam, they figured hey, everyone likes Graces combat lets do it again but shittier, what made Graces combat so "good" is that it was fast, you had to change up moves constantly to hit multiple weaknesses so it did not get spammy and had a ton of skills for titles. What did Bamco do? Made combat slower and made it so you could spam basic art chains to hit the weaknesses. The game looks flashy but its literally press one button to win.
The Characters are fucking garbage, Sorey is so bland, its like they took Cress,Lloyd and Shing and fused them to make garbage. Dezel is so fucking edgy it hurts, I like Roses personality but her writing is trash.
Berseria also looks like fucking garbage, I own every release to date, and Im so fucking sad that my favorite game series is becoming more and more garbage, to pander to a wider western audience.
