>John Romero, the legendary visionary behind the Wolfenstein, Doom, and Quake franchises is hard at work on a new shooting game. Though he’s worked on games that have become the basis for all of the modern first-person shooters we enjoy today, he claims his upcoming game will be "something that hasn’t been seen before."

>"Shooters have so many places to go, but people just copy the same thing over and over because they’re afraid to try something new. We’ve barely scratched the surface.”

>“I’m really excited to start making it because it’s just such a great idea. Instead of just pumping out game after game after game, it’s like waiting to come up with something that’s really unique, that no-one’s seen before, and enables you to make something that you hope will be really amazing. So, we’ll see. It’s got a pretty cool fiction around it. It’s got an interesting story."

>“Call of Duty is enough of a deathmatch game to keep people coming back to it year after year, but the design isn’t breaking people’s brains – it’s expected, in the same way Madden is. You see it, you know what it is, and you know the next iteration is going to be like the previous one but in a different location, maybe a different time period. It’ll have guns and a lot of the same features.”
>“I don't want to talk about it because it's a really cool idea, it's a unique idea,” he said. “I've never seen a game like it."

Sooo.. what is it /v/ ?

Funnily enough, new Black Ops game showed how FPS genre can move forward - by implementing parkour elements. However they had no skill needed to make good vertical map design but it is the only way to innovate and with an emphasis on single player it could work.

Romero would probably make a fast paced FPS with good map design but nothing revolutionary.
>>

It's going to be multiplayer only with 64+ players in one big map. Romero talked before about how doing something like that would be his dream game

>Are developers running out of ways to reinvent the shooter? Romero thinks there is a lot more left in the genre.

>“Take something like World of Warcraft – what if that was a shooter? You have a giant world full of quests, and tons of people with PvP already in the game. If World of Warcraft was a shooter, that would be brand new – nobody would have seen something that big and that cool."

>“And it wouldn’t be anything like WoW because of the nature of being a shooter – it would probably concentrate on a lot of areas that were similar to Team Fortress 2. Perhaps villages would become like TF2 levels, where you would try to score as much as you could before deciding to move on. Or that area would have specific goals, like taking out five snipers and two demo guys to retrieve some key items. Perhaps once you’ve exhausted that village, you could go to another one down the road. And maybe the planet’s full of them – nobody’s played a game like that."

He might be onto something here. I've never heard of any concept of a video game like this before :^)

>>
>>334483519
no i mean romero, see what happened the second romero went on his own and didn't have carmack's tech to back him up
>>
>>334482924
So Romero would like to make Dwarf Fortress of FPS games in a sense that it is a creator's franchise that stands the test of time and is infinitely moldable but forgets that DF's strength comes from the fact that it is not burdened by visuals.

I'd say it is possible, some games like TF2 will never look bad and I'm confused as to why more creators didn't opt for tinkering with franchises instead of going for sequels.

Brink had shit for movement, it was among the slowest of FPS games and chokepoints were everywhere. Titanfall was an extremely sluggish game that revolved around getting into mechs rather than traversing the terrain.

Black Ops did new movement scheme somewhat successfully unlike those dead games.

>>334484098
If you're acting all smart, why not go back to at least Mirror's Edge? Because when you enter a mech in Titanfall it's only a zoom mode.

It's not that surprising to know that someone who took vidya in one direction because of a couple of ideas would have a couple more ideas that would lead in different directions. I'm just curious which way he's gone.

I hope it'll be a Doom clone with all the refinement modern technology allows.

It's pretty sad the genre died and the more similar games we've ever had are the fucking Metroid Prime series, it's especially weird there hasn't be any kickstarter appelling to nostalgia for another fast paced fps, with focus on complex level design and enemy placement.

That only means that BO was able to execute it successfully. It doesn't mean it came up with something new to move the genre foward.

I'd pay $60 for that. Map design in FPS is extremely underrated these days. Maybe there's plenty of attention being given to aesthetics and detail, but the layouts themselves are fucking dull compared to Romero's work in Doom and Quake. Not to mention all the scripted events and canned animation sequences breaking up the action.

Maps started getting smaller due to console limitations, and user limitations (console players don't want convoluted map design because it might mean they'd have to actually look around instead of just keep advancing forward thru rooty tooty shooty corridor), and developers wanting everyone to NOT be able to miss anything (secrets used to be called secrets because the developers never expected all players to find their dev shrine area where they had 80s hair metal play at FULL BLAST because THE JUUUUUUUNGLE WELCOME TO THE JUUUUUUUUNGLE YAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!)

To be fair he accomplished a lot in his youth, in spite of his step-father (when he got rich on doom, stepfather even admitted he was wrong to dissuade romero from vidya).

It's just after Doom that he became an Idea Guy, and even then he was acknowledged as the best level designer.

Carmack was the code mage that gave ID the tools to create great games. You can clearly see ID worked as a team, as any attemps to make the next big doom failed once they split up
Doom 3 and Quake 4 had Carmack backing up the tech aspect, and they more than delivered as technical achievements but still sucked design wise

>>
>>334489213
Doing rocketry and doing rocket science are actually two very separate fucking things. Teaching yourself basics of rocket engineering isn't hard and there are quite literally thousands of people who do that every day across the world. Carmack himself is not actually personally working on any of the Armadillo projects either: he merely funds the organization. The actual science is done by other other people.
Carmack is no genius, as it becomes rather painfully obvious when you see him talk, or look at the games and actually even his own stances towards game design are pretty fucking stupid. He was good at his job, he was a good programer, I guess he has a good head on math and engineering, but that is about it.

This. Carmack is a slightly above average autist. He himself admitted that deisgning the Doom3 engine was the epitome of his abilities.
It's the memester fagglet kids like >>334489920 who picked up all the ironic worshipping threads about him and took them for serious. It's like that Descartes quote. Carmack has become a living meme.

Rage was the most notable technical failure in the history of video games. Well, apart from VtmB.

Romero literally admits it was all his idea in a fucking video you retard

Daikatana advertisement was the first whiff of numale plague to infest video games.

Its a fan remake of tomb raider 2. Probably it gets a C&D at this time

he was right about arena shooters being niche, it was a dominant design model that died out. don't talk like a retard.

Maybe it's a game where you shoot people but it uses your life bar, and you will lose your life whilst shooting but if you get to kill an enemy you will replenish your health. How bout that for balance.

setting influences gameplay. there's a reason why platinum games don't bother with level design.

>Arena is a setting, end of story.
Actually, no. Arena is a type of level layout tied with specific set of gameplay mechanics and functions. Arena shooters are a specific type of shooters that got separated from the main branch of FPS, mostly generally relaying on some kind of basic linear progression model: what separated Arena shooters from the rest was a specific gameplay setup, not the settings. In fact, settings are completely irrelevant, setting implies a narrative dimension, which arena shooters don't have: arena, once again, is specific type of level layout, created for mechanical reasons. The specific narrative dress up which the levels and mechanics company is irrelevant and rarely consistent among arena shooters.

You are an idiot who simply does not know what the commonly used and well known term meant, and now you are too cowardly to admit it.

Post YFW John Romero finally makes you his bitch.
>>
>>334484719
You mean Hexen?

I'm pretty sure Quake was supposed to be an FPS with RPG elements in the world of Mythos. Sandy was THE very advocate for that idea.

I'm hoping someone will come out with a futuro-medieval FPS like Quake was.
>>
>>334488057

Titanfall parkour is a league above BO3 in all aspects
>>
>>334491605
No, QUAKE was supposed to be medieval melee fps. That's why the game feels so unfinished and weird, they ran out of time and just did what they knew and turned it into 3d doom.
>>
>>334491340
I dont blame his daughter for the new Tomb raider. Even a good writer cant save that awful piece of shit

Romero has mentioned that he'd like to work in Carmack again. Carmack's ego is way too big though apparently. I would love for them to kiss and make up and make one more phenomenal shooter, if they even can at this point.

According to who? Carmack is a shit team leader and just wants to be left alone with his code, doesn't seem like an ego type to me
