"Number of unique games published at Retail in the US between 2009 to 2015.
Went from ~800 to less than 200."
what happened /v/?
Companies stopped making middleware
Since everything has to be a multiplatinum release, they've stopped making anything that isn't potentially a massive hit, which means that anything not destined for immediate huge returns won't be made.
Also, loads of games simply aren't being published for retail because of digital distribution.
The Wii died, no more Russel Grant's Wii Fit Astrology Extravaganza shovelware games.
The same reason Hollywood and much of our media is now shit. Creative decay.
The worst part I think it's that we're only getting sequel after sequel

There are plenty of smaller games but they are usually digital only.

>many new IPs announced this gen
>DUDE ITS JUST SEQUELS :(
Less shovelware garbage, bigger focus on indies/digital.
I mean just notice how there's almost zero retail shovelware on current gen consoles
Meanwhile though... pic related

OK reddit.
More digital
Less kusoge
Not to mention, many developers have been closing house the last three years so less games to publish.

The shovelware market on consoles is dead, they moved over to mobile platforms
>>334437743
Really? Then how come 100% of console games are shovelware? It used to be something like 20%.
>>334438181
>wonderful 101
>bayonetta 2
>star Fox zero hopefully
>pikmin 3
>most WiiU games
Face it /v/
The WiiU was the hero we needed
But you all turned away

>he posts as 90% of steam greenlight shit is rock simulator or indie walking sim
>>334438671
Even the wiiu is crap, though it's the only console with actual games this gen. Even with the ps3 has no gaems gen, ps3 ended up having games toward the end of its life, and x360 had games.
Go to your local Wal-Mart and find their video game "aisle" (it's just a shit-bin)
notice how much shovelware is in there. they stopped wasting money to press that to discs

Nice rebuttal

>I mean just notice how there's almost zero retail shovelware on current gen consoles
That's because this gen is lacking a PS2/Wii behemoth.
>>334437245
>good games are basically impossible find now
>hurr you're just a jaded asshole you're supposed to sift through literally thousands of unfinished or otherwise horrendous games in order to find a hand full of decent ones
>>334437245
>Less shovelware garbage
Au contraire, the shovelware garbage simply went digital and mobile.

this
It's more expensive for shovelware companies to make games that approach looking appropriate for this gen.
The interest of the casual audience is gone as well, thanks in part to the Wii U both being a confusing sell to normies due to the name, and severely lessening the focus on motion control.
Probably the more significant factor is that the casual audience is really fleeting and only really picks up a console when it's still a fad.
