A fellow /vr/ poster I see, personally I feel he did. His moveset was unique and he was decently relevant at the time with mother 2 only abour 4-5 years old and mother 3 on n64 still being a thing at the time. In a way samus was probably less relevant then ness or c.falcon at the time.

Discovering Ness was in this in 1999 or whenev it came out was one of the best days of my life. Back then everyone in the US had forgotten about EB and it wasn't old enough to be some hipster icon. I have never felt so accommodated by a game in my life since that moment.
He was the only character on the roster I wasn't familiar with prior to playing it, so it introduced me to an amazing RPG experience I might not otherwise have had. I doubt I'm alone on this. Marth was the same when Melee came out.

I dont mind or care about ness being in the game, but his move set/the way he handled was just dogshit. Not in an unfair way really, I didnt mind playing against ness, but I just found it incredibly frustrating and not fun to play. Although I also hated yoshi, kirby, jigglypuff and dk for those same reasons.

kinda, I thought link, samus, pikachu, mario, luigi and fox are really well done (also tight to play, I 100% need tight controls if I'm going to playing it, I cant stand loose/mushy controls or slow move animations). Although pikachu was incredibly unfair if played "correctly", if you just focused on defense you could basically never take damage and just whittle them down with lightning bolts

Honestly, Ness was probably more relevant to the Japanese at the time than Captain Falcon was. Marth would have been a more popular choice, for sure, but there's no way they could have implemented him the way Sakurai wanted to.

If Marth was in 64 then Roy probably would have been a legit newcomer instead of a clone. That alone would have given him more staying power since unique characters rarely get cut unless there's specific circumstances(Probably couldn't get Snake back for Smash 4 or just didn't want him back but I feel 3rd parties have less stay power anyway because they're 3rd party, Squirtle/Ivysaur/ICies cause of 3DS, Mewtwo got bodied by time constraints for Brawl likely but leftover data suggest he was planned and probably at least somewhat in development, remember he said Jiggs, TL and Wolf almost got cut cause of time constraints too). Lucas probably still would have gotten in Brawl but with a different moveset then he currently has. Ness would have been SOL though.
