What went wrong with the Virtual Boy?

They used eye raping red and black monochrome, the controller was shitty, and the games were 90% shovelware and sports shit.
It was ahead of its time

It was rushed out before it was finished
Hardware was a tad rushed, they could have spent more time developing it. Tons of them have display issues due to a weak connection between the display board for each eye view finder and the device itself. I've had to do a ton of repairs on mine just to stop the screen from glitching out.
Otherwise I'd agree with the above anon, way ahead of its time. I love mine to death.

Wearing it in public made you look like an asshole.

Everything. The original tech demo that impressed everyone and got the project off the ground in the first place had head tracking and ran on an IBM computer. So Nintendo first made it a standalone device, then had to add a big heavy metal casing because of some bullshit EM radiation law so the thing couldn't even be fixed to the user's head and needed that idiotic tripod.

20 years too early

The technology was far from ready.

Two colors.
That said, I still own a functioning Virtual Boy. I bust it out every so often for giggles, although it has a Bomberman themed Tetris clone that is actually a really really good game.

OK, now you're just making shit up.
I still have mine complete in box. I'll probably sell it.
It was an experiement that was nowhere near ready for release but Nintendo pushed it out anyway despite Yokoi's insistence it wasn't ready.
