That's the path across the bridge from the tree, right? It seemed like it ended at a set of stairs that led up to the Greatwood fight. I found an NPC by a locked door after fighting my way across another bridge, the one by the sewer shortcut, as well as a door that was blocked by fog. I've yet to find my way into this tower (I'm assuming that's the cathedral looking building by the NPC just past the fuckers with the bowls and saws) people keep mentioning.

I farmed 30 souls with rotted greatwood because one day everytime i was summoned the host and other phantoms would be stuck in animation. That includes bosses as well.

Enemies are more aggressive and deal more damage, but they're also much much easier to stun. Some of the knights act like they're made of fucking paper, it's kind of ridiculous. Even bosses will stagger after enough damage.
It's not necessarily more difficult, but you'll get more mileage out of good reach weapon than you will a shield against the elite chaff.

Yes, the key can be found in another place at High Wall. It's a house with 3 giant weapon zombies and a few dogs. The way to the house is past the transforming undead on the rooftop. After you descend the ladder, look for a room that has a lance knight inside. Follow the door behind him and you should reach it.
The key is in a back corner at the bottom of some stairs leading to a dead end.
