Flaws were there, sure, but they were outweighed by the advantages. And while paladins were ass in PvE except for healers and buffers (which made it mandatory for a raid to have 4-5 paladins with differently talented holy specs for access to kings, sanctuary, improved wisdom and might as well as constant salvation to all dps), in PvP retribution was the reason why paladins were so despised. He onehits you, bubbles and runs away from your team that wants to tear him to bits now.
