bros, am i doing something wrong or straight swords are the best weapons for now? i loved using claymore in the previous dark souls but this time it felt so fucking slow and the damage wasn't even that great.
straightswords are pretty fuckin great. I just love my greatsword because there are very few enemies whose poise I cannot wreck. It completely trivialized abyss watchers. I get fucked by straightswords in pvp, that shit goes so fast I have to do some serious mind games to actually hit the guy using it.
I used a longsword till I got this. Thing's a beast.

Been noticing this since I've been using the Morian Blade since damn near the beginning of the playthrough. You can just start swinging while players run at you, and they'll have no time to dodge/hit you, you get a few free hits off, they burn through estus like mad, and you almost never use yours because you almost always lay into them before they reach you.
It's a bit refreshing, honestly. A Straight Sword meta sounds fun....kinda. I feel like Warden Twinblades might start taking over them though... that, and Hidden Body/Hidden Weapon spellcasters. Hidden Body seems like it could wreck just about anything if used properly.

The problem lies with the upgrade materials. There isn't a lot of titanite scales, so for the majority of the game you'll be stuck with a +2/+3 boss weapon. Meanwhile longswordfags can upgrade to +6 and infuse very quickly

They're a bit faster. A lot of the times if the katana fag attacks me while I'm halfway through attacking him, my attack doesn't get cancelled and I get to wail on him for 2 big hits while I take a dinky katana hit.

Its a pretty straight path for the first 2 (they're the candles in the alcoves, didn't even realize they were interact-able first 2 trips through), then after the bonfire in front of the big gates you just follow the raised ground. There's one obvious one, and another nigger hiding behind a tree.

Here is what you do: Take a bandits knife or the duals, two hand them and slide through the swamp. Even if you have 0 FP you can slide. Just Bline for the towers and hope nothing follows you.

I'm shit at these games and never do PvP but I've won every invasion using a Raw Broadsword and using r1 as my attack 90% of the time, with the odd running r1 or r2 every now and again.
So I'd say yeah, straightswords are at the very least, exceptionally good in comparison to all the meme weapons people are using.

The Rooftops are the worst part of Cathedral arguably.
But everything else can be managed. I had Lightning Spear, so I tore through the Knights easily. Giants aren't shit, just stick at their ankles.

Magic is still great for co-op but it certainls requires more investment, it's pretty balls on your own because all the enemies can so quickly get in your face with quick stagger recovery.

I keep hearing that straight swords are incredibly good in this one. What ones would you guys recommend? I only just started so i have the knight sword. I've heard about some dark sword is a good straight sword, but i've also seen others in screenshots that i have no idea about.
Straight swords scale better with strength, right? Or do they all scale with both strength and dex? Maybe it's better to dump more points into dex so you can use both straight swords and other dex weapons like the katanas?

Cathedral's one of the best areas in the game.
Acquire skill.
Coolest covenant leader is in there as well, I managed to fix all my bad decisions with stats which was fun.
Deacons are easy because you can just get a Great Scythe or Partizan +3 and mow through them. The first time you fight them it's fucking creepy as shit, honestly one of my favourite bosses.

I find Pontiff is like super dependent on how people play. Friend of mine spent nearly an hour and a half trying his best to beat him. This was with a summon as well. Got him in the end with half health and 3 estus left.
Whereas I manage to down him on my first try with a summon, albeit I only had 5% health with 0 sunny d left by the end. Only thing I did differently from him was I ignored pontiff's shadow and just kept whacking away.

Well I just popped back to Firelink and Yoel is dead before I could complete the quest that kills him anyway. Not sure what triggered it, but I guess I got greedy waiting until later for free levels. Besides the obvious question of what killed him, what dictates when people randomly show or not? Hawkwood only seems to be there a third of the time, and I haven't seen Darkmoon lady more than once.

I love how From handled covenants in this one.
Darkwraiths are likely to get 3v1d so it forces them to drop their honourable duel bullshit, and just assassinate the host whenever they get the chance, and be scummy fucks who use whatever they can to their advantage. It doesn't matter if you lose since you get the Red Eye Orb and can just do it infinitely. This makes Darkwraiths as a whole a bit more threatening and it makes their purpose much more clear - kill the host, nothing else. If you're alone and a Darkwraith is after you, you are in very real and present danger because he is not going to fuck around, he just wants your tongue and if you're alone he will capitalise on it.
For people who like to invade for fun, the mound makers are all about it. The fact that Warmth is a covenant reward basically means it's designed for fight clubs. Grapebros are easily the best covenant in the game because you can be a dick or a chaotic good white phantom if you feel like it.
Blue Sentinels and Darkmoon Blades share covenant rewards so you can do both to get what you want, instead of having covenant rewards be locked behind a dead covenant. The blues being dead is yet again another dumb choice on From, but it's not like they didn't account for it.
Being a Sunbro is as easy as just slipping on a ring. Being able to switch covenants quickly lessens the importance of covenants as allegiances, but honestly this is just a better approach as that was what it boils down to in the end anyway.
All covenant items are rare drops from PvE enemies so you can farm them if you want. In the case of the Wolf covenant you can literally just go to the second swamp bonfire and farm bladegrass from the goats standing outside, so I got my Curved Greatsword in about half an hour in between the genuine invasions.
Overall really great improvements all round. Only complaint is I locked myself out of mound-makers, but this just means i've been populating other covenants instead so whatever.

In terms of scaling it doesn't matter, gems have got you covered because you really can just have Sharp Great Clubs, or Heavy Rapiers and it will work out fine.
The only thing that should affect your decision is what weapons you actually want to use. For example some weapons require 25 Dex minimum, so you'll need dex to use it whatever you choose.
Alternatively, just do both and then use Refined gems, which are for quality builds.
If you don't like your build? Just respec.

Heavy is full on ultra str scaling while refined makes it a good hybrid between str and dex.
If you want to pretty much only use str and heavy weapons go heavy, if you kinda want to use dex scaling weapons use refined. Be warned though, heavy Great Axes will be doing a good amount more than refined.

The problem with greatswords in 3 is that enemies attack so quickly and have endless stamina pools. After they hit you with/you dodge five attacks in quick succession, you no longer have enough stamina left to properly swing a gigantic weapon at them and still manage to get away from their next combo or even really enough time to do anything but keep retreating.
I got an Astora Greatword to +7 and I regret it. I've just been using the Irithyll Straight Sword lately, and my life has been much easier for it.

I used this thing for the 2nd half of the game. I have 50 strength and upgraded it to +5 and now it hits like a truck. In 1H mode it does a sweep attack and in 2H mode it does a straight attack. If you hold R2 in 2 hand mode it knocks enemies in the air and does like 900+ damage. Shit is perfect.

Your regular actions barely use Stamina so it's mostly a pointless stat to just dump things into, you can just have the Grass Crest as a backpack or the Cloranthy Ring (they don't stack). Only specific weapon actions will make a difference.
The only issue is that with some heavy weapons you can end up using a whole bar with two attacks, in which case you will need to upgrade enough stamina to leave you enough stamina for an extra action afterwards.
I just left my stamina at 100 points since it's a nice round number and didn't touch it since. As you say, it's not worth the points, unless you actually need the extra magic pixel.

Weapon level definitely has an impact and it goes by the HIGHEST upgraded weapon you ever owned at any point during your game, even if you tossed it away
I've heard two versions so far.
>version 1
Weapon range has to be within +- 2 at all times (though I guess for invaders there might not be an upper limit). So if you are an invader and your character has a +5 you can only invade +3 hosts or higher.

There are some "tiers" of weapons and you can only matchmake with people one tier below or above you

I think it's scaling might be a bit worse, but it has a bit higher base damage than the claymore, has a similar moveset with a more useful R2 (half circle swing rather than the lunge) as well as bleed damage.
Not to mention the fact it's hands down one of the sexiest (if not the most) weapons in the series (or ever made desu)
I've got it at +7 now without infusion and it's still doing me good with bosses and PvP. Haven't gone up against Pointiff yet though.

Astora Straight Sword has the highest base damage among the straight swords at 129. As scaling is fucked right now you can infuse it with raw and then buff it with resin or magic/faith. Most speedruns currently also rely on this tactic.

After I finished the game and explored a shitton I had 40 Titanite Scales and 4 Titanite Slabs. I upgraded my Longsword to +10, my Pyromancy Flame to +10, Fume Greatsword to +5 and Grass Crest Shield to +5. Upgrade materials come in abundance in the late game you just have to explore everything.
I like my darksword but apparently astora is better? 12 faith for nothing is a lot.
