I didnt play 4. i played smt nocturne, the one on ps2. I started having to use a guide to figure out where to go and like 5 or 6 times i died in a random battle due to either 1 hit moves or being teleported around and running out of hp/mp to keep going. lost over an hour of progress each time. i forgot where i quit, i think after the big tower with the 3 egyptian sisters. think i had to go to the park at the start of the game next. its just not fun having to rely on a guide and perfect strategy that would take tons of replaying to be able to make it.
that was my first and last smt game, im never trying the series again after how shitty nocturne was. persona is great, theres a fun cast of characters and good stories, and the dungeons are simple. I havent beaten devil survivor in a while but its a fun strategy game mixed rpg. i will get back to it eventually and then play the sequel.

I completely agree that getting ambushed and instant killed is absoutely ridiculous (although to be fair u can have a demon that stops ambushes). For the most part though the gameplay in SMT is so much better than persona.

Bruh I dont have a problem with difficulty/challenge. Ive beaten the persona games on their hardest difficulty and beat a majority of catherine (missing the last few extra rapunzel stages though, fuck those to hell seriously). My problem with smt nocturne was utter tedium. If theres going to be hard or risky battles, the layouts should be more streamlined. I wish the gameplay of nocturne was put in like, tartarus. hard gameplay but a sense of progression and knowing youll reach the end if you keep going.

It was damaged and hurting for most of this year, but todays announcement of SMT4A killed it officially. I realized they insisted on 2015, then 2016, but have yet to show 1 screenshot of the game in english. Atlus japan has been dead silent. There are a ton of jrpgs, 2 of them from atlus themselves, coming out this summer so a worldwide release is impossible.
Theres no hope left here. The game will get delayed again into the end of the year for japan. And we will at best get in spring 2017. And that will be that.
