The thing that surprises me most about BB is it was supposed to be a crash and burn concept from the beginning, but Dini, Timm and Burnett somehow flipped the script and everything turned out better than expected.
A lot of people think a measure of someone's skill is doing something really amazing, but I think it's doing something that should go off like a time bomb but they keep stable until everyone's left the building unharmed.
Bruce Wayne's old and does mostly nothing? Teenage Batman? High school drama? Few to no returning villains? Batman has failed Gotham and all his protege have left?
The fans just came off BTAS and TNBA, they would tear apart anyone they heard involved in such an idea besmirching it like this. Career suicide.
If someone told me to write an on-going comic about the BB premisethe comic in fact happened and illustrates my point of how different creative teams deal with ideas with very different results, I wouldn't make it past 3 issues at 22 pages, they managed 22 minutes of this for 3 season.

I loved Ed Edd n Eddy too and although I consider the school season incredibly weak, the finale movie more than makes up for it. I am so god damn happy that show got to go out on top with the Big Picture Show and not the weird shit like the Aliens or Valentines episode. It was absolutely brilliant, a love letter to slapstick and the golden age of CN, results in the only true unequivocal win for the protags, and was basically created as a final send-off to the Cartoon Cartoon era.
