Artorias is the only one of the three characters you mentioned with any balls.
Velstadt was too much of a pussy to go actually take care of the problem causing everything to go bad.
Raime didn't get good, in fact he couldn't so he just told some evil lady to fuck his shit up so he could become stronger. It was never through his own skill that he got so powerful.
Artorias does the abysswalking thing in a time when everyone else was batshit scared of doing, pulled a selfless act for Sif, and his experience of the abyss is what helps the player character figure out how to beat it.

Power comes from Souls, the bigger your Soul the more power you wield. Artorias is no different, his power came from Gwyn.

Again, that doesn't make a character badass. None of what I mentioned about Artorias had to do with his soulpower. It had to do with how ballsy and selfless he is and how much of a innovator he is within his universe. You can't buy that with souls.
