Yeah there are bonfires everywhere. The amount of shortcuts is pretty ridiculous too. The path to the boss in Irithyll is an amusing example of that. You take the lift and open the small door to make a shortcut back to the church bonfire. Then you open the big gate and make yet another shortcut to the church bonfire, making the previous shortcut completely useless. It's almost like the devs thought "oh people love shortcuts" and put a bunch of them in the game without putting much thought into what they will even be used for.

I'm tired of this "DS1 WASN'T LINEAR" meme. You could say DS1 was less linear, but it was very poorly designed.

It was:

a. area 1 OR area 2 -> these skeletons are hard, but I'm masochistic so I'll proceed anyway -> fuck, why can't I progress -> I HAVE TO GO BACK NOW WTF -> area 1

b. area 1 -> area 6 because you picked a gift that allows you to unawarely skip quarter of the game

c. get LV -> area 8 OR area 9 OR area 10 but it makes absolutely no difference whatsoever

Souls games are at their best when they present you vast areas to explore and secrets to find, including completely optional areas you can easily miss.

I like how you casually dismiss one of the coolest and most memorable elements of Dark Souls 1's world design.Thanks to the Master Key the first third of the game is incredibly open. It's not like Dark Souls 3 where you skip content because you're not aware it exists or want to do it later, the skips in Dark Souls 1 are very deliberate and give you all sorts of benefits. You can even do New Londo Ruins as your first area of the game, for crying out loud.

It's not totally linear obviously but compare that to pic related. Keep in mind that you only need to do two of the pre-Sen's Fortress areas, so everything else is optional and if/when/how you do it is completely up to the player.

Tbh Bloodborne has the same problems. Multiple shortcuts to the same destination while one is better than the others, and every boss spawns a lamp after defeat. Granted, excluding this fact the lamp placements are probably better, but DaS3's areas are kinda larger than most BB areas. It's also hit or miss sometimes, as example the Cathedral has imo really good shortcut/bonfire placement design, while in Undead Settlement it was all over the place.

I loved Witcher 3, though after the first few hours the game was just too easy. I chose to make the combat more interesting, or at least look cooler. Instead of spamming and such, I tried to make fights last longer and try to make it feel less easy I guess. Didn't really work that well but I'd say It made the game more entertaining,

Kinda autistic actually I guess. At least the last boss fight in Hearts of Stone was somewhat challenging till you figured out the simple pattern.
