I play Evolve everyday and it is actually an ok game.
Believe it or not it is very competitive, and as someone already said ITT you have more chances winning when playing as monster (alone) than playing as Hunter (4 man team).

The game flopped because of the ridiculous dlc shit and sometimes you can encounter some shithead hackers, but that's it.
If you can buy the game for 10 or 15 bucks it's actually worth it.
I have played 400 hours since christmas sales and im hooked and i'll be playing the game for a long time, because there's a lot of variety in monsters and hunters and you can make great combos and shit.

I actually recommend it, but as i said, pay only 10 or 15 bucks for it.

The game also flopped because of the routine it gives. I played it for a while but came to the realization that every game was exactly the same with little deviation. This would be fine if the game wasn't actually boring to play on endgame, but it was. Didn't help that they killed the game through their intense greed though.

Let me explain how this game works.
Theres a game mode called arena, where the monster starts in stage 2 and everyone is inside a dome, so the fight starts instantly.
In that mode the monster has higher chances of winning because a monster in Stage 2 is actually pretty powerful.
But the comp mode is ONLY hunt, in hunt the monster starts in stage 1 (the monster is very very weak and must run away and feed as fast as possible to get more powerful).
Well, in hunt there are a lot factors that can determine the outcome of the match.
Wildlife, bufs, caves, highgrounds, even bushes where you can literally hide.
A good player knows where all of these are in every map, and he will use it to his advantage.
Also picking the right hunters for every monster is vital.
For example, picking bucket against a behemoth is absolutely fucking bad, but if you pick him against a Wraith it's very good.
So, yes the game can be very competitive.

I can agree with you some of the hype pertaining to it was because of the Developers. But MOST of the hype was because of Games Con and all the media covering it as if it was a fucking godsend. Paid reviews or biased reviews painted the game in a good light, when in reality all we got was Day one costly DLC, repetitive circle gameplay, and a 60$ price tag. Game was over hyped with fake hype and gained real hype in the process because of it. The developers were not the main focus of why people bought it, which by the way, did not include many of the key L4D developers, and only had some original members in the new studio.

It depends on many factors, but Laz is not unkillable. If you take flame breath his invisibility doesn't work well. You can snipe him with rock while he is jetpacking and then just hulk smash.

So if thats the case how the fuck are you meant to build a competitive team around the game? Do you have 4 designated human players and 1 designated monster player? How do competitive games work? Do your hunters play their monsters and then their hunters play your monster?

A competitive team game has to have an equal amount of human roles on each side or it doesn't make sense. Like in natural selection there would be 5 people playing marines and the sixth would be the commander view, even though the two roles were very different you still all worked together vs 6 enemy players and then at half time you could swap

1v4 just doesnt make sense for a 'competitive' game, at the most basic lowest level of design

It's definitely not for everyone, you need the right mindset to be a monster player. I find it very exhilerating which is why I'm sad the game is ded as fuck because of the cash cowing.

The whole getting hunted down by 4 other people and somehow managing to survive and kill them all is the best feeling I've ever had playing video games. The beta was especially hilarious when Kraken was OP as fuck, people would dome me and that would be the game ender because they couldn't run away from me.

DLC was never this game's problem, or even a problem at all. The shit on launch was literally all just useless skins, none of the extra characters were finished so they couldn't have been cut content. The fact that a few of them came out completely overpowered is neither here nor there, the game had already pretty much died before that even became an issue.

No, the problems with this game were twofold: misconceptions and mistakes. First, they lost out on quite a lot of sales, primarily on PC, due to all the bitching in the steam reviews over all the DLC (primarily because the morons let anyone who played in the pre-release beta/demo review the game), even though that shit didn't matter, and it really did have enough polish to be worth buying at release, if you were the kind of person who likes this kind of game. But that brings us to the second problem, the game kills its own playerbase. As has been mentioned in this thread, a competent monster can destroy an average, uncoordinated team, while even a pro monster will get flattened by a competent team. What this did was slowly discourage all but the truest fans from ever touching the pile of dogshit ever again, monsters would quit the moment they realized how fucked they were in the higher skill brackets, and hunters would quit in droves due to being shitters without friends. It didn't die because of DLC, or even balance issues, it was always going to cannibalize its own playerbase due to the inherent flaws of its core design principles, with monsters chewing up bads and then being chewed up themselves later. Maybe if they had spent time overhauling these principles instead of making new shitty map modes and pointless new characters, we could have had a good game.
