One of the easiest bosses in the whole series. It's not like his moveset or damage is shit, but he's really lacking in HP. My +3 fire mace was hitting him for around 1/7 HP with one-handed charged power attack.

Once I figured out it's better to dodge his attacks instead of blocking them, and that you could attack him while he transforms then it became pretty easy. Still hard as fuck for a first boss though, compared to the Assylum Demon of DS1.

Ass Demon is indeed a joke to a Souls veteran, but if it's your first Souls game then it's a pretty good boss fight to show you what you can expect. Somehow I doubt people who've never touched a Souls game won't die at least 20 times to the first DS3 boss. They might even refund the game before they can get any further.

When I was new to souls, I was showing my friends the tutorial area, and letting them play it.
They'd always be anxious as to what's behind that fog gate before the boss, and I wouldn't tell them.
But, then as soon as they enter, and they see the big beast, I'm quick to say "Don't worry. He can't get you when you're up there."
Every fucking time, they do a big sigh of relief as they gather them self, and then have the biggest oh shit moment of their life as the Demon flies up, and crushes them with his mace.

I admit I actually lied since whilst I did find the area it's in, I didn't find the ring itself until I came back later.
If you go out of the shrine to the left (at the upper level) you'll see a tower that's locked. In front of it is a white tree and a roof just next to it - you can actually run up the tree and jump off it to get on the roof, giving you the lower access to the crow traders in the rafters. It's tricky, but possible and probably intended for persistent players.
One of the rafters leads to a "dead end".
If you purchased the 20000s key then you can just use the ladder and drop down.

I just beat this boss last night so it's very fresh in my head. What worked for me was not locking on, just like with BSB. It gives you that much of a speed increase to dodge his swipe attacks and hit him in the dick repeatedly.

Abuse their range and ability to fuck shields. Abuse their rolling-slashes since that's their one attack that isn't just poking.
I mean that's what spears are anon, they're boring but effective in any scenario. Frankly I wouldn't bother, Scythes are super good now and they provide reach and crowd control. Halberds have always been good-spears. The Partizan is pretty fun.

Actually, this one has some good bosses, but DaS bosses are generally shit. They're usually about figuring out a pattern/gimmick instead of anything organic.
Bloodborne had a lot more fights with fast, strong, fair enemies like Gascoigne. We usually only get one of those in any DaS game, this one has a few, like the previously mentioned Pontiff.

I make good use of a spear for pvp, getting people down to 15 hp just for them to run and drink before i can swing my great hammer. Running spear attacks can punish everything but the lightest of the light rolls.

I began as a Thief, but only because I wanted the most gimp faith stat. I ditched all my weapons and armor because I wanted the Deprived experience.
This turned out to be a pretty shitty idea since there were no weapon pickups like in the previous games. Had to fist assholes before he first boss until they dropped a broken shortsword or whatever.

I also just beat Abyss Watchers and Dark Souls 3 has to be the easiest Souls game yet. In BB I was stuck for hours on Bloodstarved Beast, but I one shot the tree in DS3. I was hyped after seeing people talk about Abyss Watchers a bit, but it's just Maria 2.0. Looks pretty cool and I like the first phase, but they have zero poise. Also able to be backstabbed and parried because zero poise bosses aren't easy enough.

Immediately make it Raw -> Normal if you have enough Dex to outdamage Raw -> Sharp if you have enough dex to outdamage normal.
That's pretty much everyone's first weapon in the game.
If you're doing a quality build and just want the katana as an option, Refined might actually work better.
It will tell you the numbers yourself so you just need to work it out.
I'm pretty sure Bleed is as worthless as always.
Seriously the Uchigatana really wrecks enemies early on, so many of those beefy enemies get killed in a single four-hit combo because they get bleed out. Evangelists, Parsley Chopper men, Screaming Jesus dudes, they all melt to it.

It depends, really. Once you reach the Shrine, your class doesn't matter for shit, but if you start as a Thief, Deprived, or a few others, Gundyr with fuck your shit up, but Warriors and Knights have an easy as fuck time with him.

In DaS1 I recall armor was mostly pointless for damage mitigation, but you had specific poise numbers you could mix and match for and it would guarantee that you could prevent yourself getting stunlocked by the first hit of a one-handed greatsword etc. etc.
Whilst the poise breakpoints were never listed in game (obviously), it did mean you had something to go off when deciding what to wear and you had matchups. It was quite clear how to optimise and it still let you do fashion.
In Dark Souls 2 they completely fucked it for this retarded and EVEN MORE OBFUSCATED hyper armor bullshit. In contrast armor does make you tankier, but it just meant everyone in Havels trading hits until somebody dies. Hot garbage and you got stunlocked by dagger hits so it breaks immersion super hard. Armor there was more about damage reduction to compensate for it.
I think generally high defense armor compensates for easier stunlocks. If you can avoid getting stunlocked, the design decision is that damage reduction isn't as strong in return.
In DaS3 thus far it seems it's very hard to get stunlocked, as you typically get a window to roll out. So far I haven't been able to just walk through an enemy attack but it hasn't therefore lead to my doom.
Needs more testing I guess, but in general if armor is now pointless and redundant then it may funnily enough be the best for game balance and fashion.

Demons Souls had armour matter the least out of any game in the series.
Because it added a flat defense increase, but you also got a defense increase every time you leveled up, so by late-game armour was only contributing a small % of your total defense. It was never worth it to fatroll and fashion/poison/bleed resistance were the only reasons to choose armour (in that order).
Dark Souls "fixed" this issue by allowing you to level up armour so it's defense grew with you.
BB and DaS3 changed how armour works, I'm not 100% sure how, but it's setup so it's always as equally effective and doesn't become redundant through leveling.
That's not to say armour will matter though, as long as you are under 70% and have at least SOMETHING in each slot (naked in a slot gives a huge defense debuff) fashion as status effects are all that matter.
Also poise, but I don't think there's conclusive evidence on how it works yet. It ain't like DaS1, that's for sure.

Rule of stats is:
- Get stats for the minimum requirements any weapons you want to use. 16 Strength and 18 Dex are quite good for using most of the early-game selection. You don't need to worry about stat scaling until later.
- (optional) If you want to use spells, get Attunement/Faith/Int respectively. For example I have 14 attunement, 10 Int and 12 faith which gives me access to low level sorceries and miracles. They aren't strong, they just mean I have a bit more utility.
- Anything else, throw in Vigor. If you need to level up but have no specific stat you need, it goes in health. Eventually there's a soft cap but idk where that is just yet.
Then if you feel you need more equip load or stamina, you upgrade as needed.
Avoid Luck, it's a deliberate gimmick stat.

You have 3 estus charges, you can't chug like crazy.
Plus pretty much any class not named Knight dies in 2 or 3 hits and don't have enough poise to not have his chugging be interrupted by a halberd poke in the ass.
Gundir is pretty hard for a Tutorial boss, he has the same advanced tools like a grab attack, delayed swings, variable combos and even knows to jump away or do that shoulder charge of his when people try getting too close to him.
And his second for is nuts if you don't kill it fast enough, you have to watch out for the hand, the head and the halberd, and the thing can transverse the battlefield extremely quickly.
He was actually the hardest boss until the first Lord of Cinder boss.

Which OP most probably did, if you're in front of any boss with your shield up you're going to get your shit pushed in hard. Rolling takes away a lot of the threat that using the shield and moving slowly doesn't. People don't realize this game is BB: armor edition, so they still think shields will be useful.
