My very very old TV just broke, and it's down for the count this time, so I'm in the market for a new one.

What should one keep in mind when buying a TV for gaming?

I can guess that 1080p should be a minimum requirement, but are there any other aspects of the TV that will influence the way I experience my vidya?

What TV is the best for video gaming /v/?

>inb4 >>>/g/
I am buying this TV solely for gaming. Not for watching TV or waving my /g/penis around. They wouldn't understand that.
>>
>>333913937
1. Yes, /g/ certainly would understand that.

2. www.displaylag.com
If you want a good TV for playing games you want one with no input lag. Pick whichever you like.
>>
better off using an lcd monitor than a tv if it's just for games. less input lag generally
>>
>>333914104
>certainly would understand that

I tried this thread on /g/ a few days ago, and two posts in they were talking about which TV had the best web OS, and if 4k was a meme etc etc.

I'm hoping (probably in vain) that /v/ will actually manage to stick to the topic.

If you want to go 4k, your choices are Samsung or Vizio. I personally have a Vizio P Series 65" UHD. It's pretty great for both console and PC gaming as it handles 4k 60hz, 1080p 120hz both perfectly over HDMI 2.0 and has monitor quality input delay. Was the lowest delay you could get in a TV when I bought mine, might still be.

It also only ran me $1200.

Hi poorfag, We know you can't afford to own both a monitor and TV but some of us can. So when we play casual shit we can get comfy on the couch or in the recliner and game.

But some of us have jobs, unlike you.
>>
>>333914986
I cant imagine there is anyone without either a tv or monitor

the point is you game on a monitor and you watch tv on a tv

We have to at least entertain the idea that OP has a life and people who want to see the TV with him.

And why is that exactly? Is it because perhaps, that you're in fact a retard?
>>
>>333915238
>>333914362

Dear OP, do not get a 4k display unless you're sitting excessively close to it, there is no point in having higher pixel density without being closer to the display, or if the display isn't absolutely massive (55"+). Any image enhancement seen from a 4k monitor is exclusively post-processing done internally in the display itself, i.e. a sharpening filter, contrast enhancements, etc...

Personally I suggest a Vizio panel as they come relatively cheap and run at defined resolutions instead of doing weird scaling shit. On top of that I'm currently running one as a PC monitor for gaming and other than the 60hz refresh demanding vsync there is no trouble with it at all. If you chose another TV panel for a higher refresh rate make sure that you look into its actual refresh rate as a lot of manufacturers have snake oil implementations that supposedly increase the refresh rate with software intervention, which is largely ineffective.
>>
>>333913937
Buy a 81cm samsung tv-monitor it is good you can turn off every picture buff. It has about 5ms
>>
I don't understand how TVs even exist in [CurrentYear] when monitors have:

>better display
>better color
>better price
>better response time

Why do TVs even exist? When monitors cost less and deliver more?
>>
>but are there any other aspects of the TV that will influence the way I experience my vidya?
Yes. Keep an eye out for TV reviews at rtings.com. You want to look for their input lag measurements and gray/black uniformity measurements if you care about visual quality and want to avoid backlight bleeding.
>>
>>333917704
Normalfags and console babbies.
>>
>>333917704
A monitor with better display and color than a TV will cost more than a TV, or be much smaller than a TV of the same price.
It's simple economy of scale: a shittonne more TV panels are made than monitor panels. Hell, a lot of 'cheap' monitors are just TV panels without the TV tuner.

Response time I'll grant you, but only for low-quality TN panels. IPS is still slow.
And even then it's only because TVs have a lot of processing and error correction to account for shoddy analogue connections, a TV with a "PC in" port will bypass all of that or else let you disable the processing in a menu.
>>
>>333913937
OLED has burn in issues. Go hunt down whatever Kuro tier plasma you can find.
>>
>>333918207
>IPS is still slow
>he thinks response time is the same as input lag (aka the thing that actually matters)
If a monitor operates at 60Hz, anything below 16ms response time is the same as 1ms response time because individual frames are drawn every 16ms. The only reason you'd want sub 6-8ms response time is if you're buying a 120-144Hz monitor. What you really want to look out for is input lag. Having 1ms response time means shit if the input lag is 15+ms which is often true for 1-2ms TN panels that ironically are marketed for leddit gaymers and children.
Take for example the Dell U2414H which is an IPS panel. It has an input lag of 4ms which is extremely good and on par or better than most 60Hz and even 120-144Hz TN panels.
>>
>>333917704
High end TVs destroy monitors in performance and quality of life. I've got a 42 inch 12-bit dumb TV with a respectable 8ms response time at the foot of my bed. It's got automatic dimming depending on the lighting conditions, including a colourometer, 8 inputs so I can plug everything into it, a bigass remote with everything I'll ever need, pretty good amp for speakers built in, blacks so deep they seem like OLED, and a simple black bezel all the way around. It's 1080p, but it's at the foot of my bed so I don't give a shit. It's perfect, and I got it for only $1000 on Black Friday 3 years ago.

If you want to go for a nice monitor, your best bet is getting a $600 korean 40 inch 4k on ebay. I'll be ordering one this year to replace my Ultrasharp to see if modern monitors can compete.

>>
>>333913937
No HDTV is going to need to be above 60hz. If you're PC gaming that's different, but no console or HD cable box will be outputting more than 60fps. On top of that most "120hz" monitors are actually 60fps with each frame rendered twice and interpolated. It is technically 120hz, but the only thing you're going to feel is delay in your games.

Yo homies.

I'm looking for a new /tv/ as well.

Preferrably anything 55+

Any recommendations?

I'm currently looking at

http://www.amazon.com/Sony-XBR55X810C-55-Inch-Ultra-Smart/dp/

I heard Vizios and LGs are good. I heard to stay away from Samsungs because you're playing panel lottery at that point.

Go to rtings. It has reviews on a lot of tv's and each also has gaming in mind.
I'm looking for a new tv myself and it seems that Vizio and Samsung are pretty high up there. Sony is as well but not top tier.
>>
The biggest problem I have with TVs is that they're so hard to track down in my country.

I know PCs are taking over, but you'd be genuinely lucky if you could track down a half-good one in Norway.

Say what you want about America, but you fuckers have easy access to your consumerism.
>>

>>
>>333925125
Is getting a 4k tv worth it though?
Native 4k is a long ways away for consoles and even on PC it requires a beast. I think just getting a full HD tv is a better choice. Then again I don't know how playing on a PS4 for example works on a 4k tv. Does it looks decent?
>>

that faglord barnacles on youtube just upgraded his autism cave with 3 4k samsung, I think they're 55"

plus the have hdmi 2.0 and low input lag, they look bready good.

i got one for about 200 quid a year ago and its honestly got A+ picture quality. there's no smart tv or any of that shit but if you're just going to be playing games or watching movies then you don't need that overpriced crap. it has a pc mode which cuts input lag in half but without sacrificing image quality. i very highly recommend it especially if you can get it cheap.
>>
>>333928595
just to add, the pictures make it look thick but its actually very slim and super light. also for got to add it has some of the darkest blacks i've seen so it really immerses you especially in games with very dark environments.
>>
>>333928595
>>333928729

But anon, it isn't 4K :^ )

I'm really sick of all the smart tv crap they shove into every set now. Especially on the larger ones. I just want a fucking big ass TV
>>
>>333928912
you don't need a 4k tv. no games will be in 4k till like 2 generations of console from now. also, you do know that input lag significantly increases based on the size of the tv? 32" is probably the biggest size you can get that won't have noticeable input lag. i've played witcher 3 and halo 5 on my 55" downstairs and even with pc mode on the input lag is very noticeable and annoying.
>>
>>333929217

It's something unfortunate I have to live with

I got my stuff in the living room and I need a big ass TV

http://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/vizio/d-series-4k-2016

>The Vizio D Series 4k makes for an excellent gaming TV. It has the best input lag we have seen so far on any TV, and it also handles motion quite well. If it supported more resolutions and frame rates as inputs, it would have been a great TV to use as a PC monitor.

>This is the lowest input lag we have measured on a TV so far. The time it takes for the TV to respond to a controller input is extremely low. Any serious gamers, even those playing competitively, should be pleased with the Vizio D. To get the input lag to a minimum, we had to use the 'Game' picture mode and the HDMI 5 input.

I honestly don't know what people are talking about.
I've had my TV for years and have absolutely no input lag.
I guess I lucked out and got a good tv.
Either that or it's so minscule and unnoticable that only absolute shitter would blame a 1/10th of a second delay instead of their lack of skill.

Well they are rushing to push this out and there's tons if competition.

>absolutely no input lag

I have a TV with near 1/10 of a second and its impossible to play twitch shooting games on it against people who aren't shit. Switch to display with 20ms and I do fine.

When you reach a skill level high enough, and play a game that demands reactions fast enough, youll notice the difference between 20ms-100ms.

Most console games you won't notice this lag because they don't demand fast enough reaction, hence there being no truly fast paced FPS games as on PC.

>>
>>333934702
It ALWAYS depends on the game and it can be somewhat subjective as well. I'd argue 2 frames (roughly 32ms) is where you're going to start having problems in precision games like fighters. In other games, you might be able to get away with more.

beyond stupid. not even a titan x can run 90% of recent titles at 4k with anything more than 30 fps. 1440p is the sweet spot currently.
>>
>>333933025
I bought this TV on the basis of the rtings review. In terms of gaming I'd have to say so far, so good. Be sure to turn on gaming low latency mode. There are also tons of picture options that are worth exploring for other content.

There are a few caveats: Like they say, the viewing angle is narrow, so this isn't a TV you'll want to situate in a living room. The Smart TV apps are a little on the laggy side, but if you have a console you're probably just going to use the video apps on that anyway. The remote feels cheap, although this hasn't proven to be an issue for me. The TV only has one HDMI port that supports 4K@60hz, so be aware of that as well.

Don't listen to this retard. As someone who owns pic related, a TV is better. Choose a lower lantecy tv, op. Go either Sony or Samsung.

Played Witcher 3, Crysis 3 on my Dell monitor & though it looks sharper, can't beat a bigger screen. Only times you should play games on your monitor are rts & fps games, or indie stuff.
