Taito's game's for some reason, usually have somber endings, but the shootemup RayStorm really takes the cake in having an ending that makes you feel like shit when you think about the implications. Like yeah, I wanted to beat the boss, but this is the very definition of overkill (see pic related).
It's helped that the ending is complemented by two awesome compositions, Intolerance and Ceramic Heart.

The kid dragon seals off the Intoner sisters into another dimension, not killing them. The sisters/flower monster looked similar to the white demon baby queen from Drakengard, so maybe that's the dimension they were sent to.

Explorers of Sky is an absolute masterpiece of gaming. The mechanics are tight and addicting, the new mechanics and dungeons from Time/Darkness like Spinda's Cafe and the 7 Treasure Dungeons were amazing, the Special Episodes were fucking godlike (except Team Charm's, should've been team Raider or AWD since don't see them very often), and the story itself from Time and Darkness was always incredible. One of the few games I truly consider a 10/10 of this generation.
Red and Blue were 9/10 (since they were a little less polished but still amazing games) and Super was 9.5/10 (with slightly less lovable characters as in T/D/S, but still a great story and phenomenal gameplay).
These games are better than the mainline series I tell you. If only Chunsoft's other mystery dungeon titles stacked up, then I'd call them my favorite developer.
