Haven't played NSMBU or Tropical Freeze, but I hear nothing but praise for DKC:TF and at the least, I hear that NSLU was good.
Super Mario 3D World was one of the best multiplayer platformers I've seen, outside someone being a dick and playing the Toad levels solo. It was a less impressive single-player experience, but it was clearly meant to be a couch multiplayer title.
I'd mention that titles like Mario Party 10 were probably disappointing, except that nobody was really holding out or waiting for a new Mario Party at this point. Maybe disappointment with the new Animal Crossing games, but I am surprised that anyone would look at them and assume they were intended as a "mainline" Animal Crossing game anyways.Although apparently people are enjoying Happy Home Designer regardless.

Fusion's fights were generally faster and more challenging by virtue of having more dynamic targets. Ridley, Phantoon, and Super Mother Brain basically amount to mashing missile while pointing in the right direction. I'm pretty sure Kraid's mostly the same thing, although I can't quite remember Super's version since ZM's Kraid fight is a little more clear in my head at the moment. Kraid at least tries to mix a bit of platforming in there, IIRC.

I believe the problem with the Saturn was that NoJ and NoA were having some sort of dick-slapping fight, and no 2D games received a localization as a result. So the Saturn outside Japan was stuck with just it's 3D library, which was both underwhelming and starved for titles.
The problem with the Dreamcast was that it was more expensive than the PS2 and didn't play DVDs. That was it. The PS2 sold mostly on being a dirt-cheap DVD player.
Faults for Sonic's shitty games after the Dreamcast died lay mostly at the feat of Sony, at the time.

Paper Mario had no "slow erosion". It had one game that did chopped up the good parts of the series (Super Paper Mario) and then a poorly informed follow-up that tosses out the good parts (Sticker Star).
Metroid has only had one bad game. An exceptionally bad game, sure, but just the one. Fusion didn't live up to the expectations set by Super but wasn't terrible in its own right. The Prime series was fairly good itself, even if the games became repetitive after awhile.

The people buying the n64 weren't doing it in PS1 protest. They were doing it through Nintendo loyalty. If the Saturn was actually active at the time, that loyalty probably would've been even stronger, although the sales of the n64 probably would've remained the same.
On the other hand, if the Saturn had been successful, then Sega would've survived long enough to keep the Dreamcast around and price it competitively, and they probably would've attracted some more 3rd party developers. I seem to recall quite a few Komani and Capcom games on the Saturn/Dreamcast, and hooking Castlevania or MGS would've been golden for Sega.
Dreamcast would've still had a rough launch - the DVD feature on the PS2 shouldn't be underestimated - but Sega probably could've held on if they hadn't spent the previous generation crawling through the gutter. And their future games, not reliant on Sony's demands for PS2 ports, would not have been such trash either.

I don't really give a fuck. Super's boss fights are boring, and ultimately left a less powerful impression on me than those of Fusion, even though I played Fusion after Super. The only thing SM's main bosses have going for them are that they're kind of big. None of them feel like they have any sort of different strategy. Fusion doesn't necessarily accomplish this, either, but it does have a few differently-shaped arenas that help to establish boss fights that don't feel like the same shit for the billionth time.

I mean, they already have inhouse engines and have 100% control of and understanding of the tech AND they don't have to do the AAA UBER GRAPHIXXX either.
They can have a unique style to any game and sell it based on their name and the fact that they should expect something different and enjoyable.
Really the only problem they should have is with QandA and testing.
