Wii was especially behind-the-time with its hardware in general. Their other consoles aren't that antiquated at launch.
If they really are trying to regain third-party support, it'd make sense to adopt features that third-party developers want.
Besides, with modern off-the-shelf hardware, making the platform itself support 4K (even if most software won't) is almost trivial.
