These clones added nothing but needless drama to the game. They would have been better off as alternate costumes. There would have been literally no backlash otherwise.

I'm not, and I will never be, because I've accepted the fact that EVERY SMASH GAME will always, no matter the motives, have clones.
Brawl was a exception, but even in that exception, we had side-clones.
