I think PSX is an American thing, not once have I heard be called that in the UK. It's always been the 'Playstation' it became the PS1 when the PS2 came out.

Nah... because of the Nintendo/Sony deal that prototype SNES CD was the Playstation.
Since the Playstation 1 as we know it was literally a black-op for Sony. I think it was Ken Kutaragi that built it as a virtually budgetless project under Sony Music at the time. That's where it had the codename PSX.
PSX as reference to Playstation lasted for a long time. It only really dropped off when the PS2 came out.
It's an easy way to weed out younger people... I guess.
