Once you spend some money on a nice pair of expensive speakers or headphones, you will realize that having a dedicated audio card is pretty much essential.

Internal sound cards are more likely to be 'gamer hardware' or whatever. External DACs are more pointed at music oriented things, and more generalized.
Chances are the audiocard built into your mobo is fine though. It's rare that you actually need an external DAC.
Unless you get a decent pair of headphones, ($150+) there's no real point.
Either way, it's probably unnecessary, though getting a good pair of headphones on their own can do a lot for a setup.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but internal mobo sound output used to be shit, these days it's not, so audio cards have become more of a specialist/enthusiast item.
