I hate all the characters and their designs. I only played an hour of it until I realized by memory card was broken and couldnt save and that I was already contemplating giving it back to my midget mexican friend Jose who let me borrow it
Bad: random encounter rate
Good: everything else
Had two directors with completely different visions of how the game should play. Squaresoft told both of them that they would be fired if they removed the content of the other. The result was Squaresoft sending reps to babysit the project.
Months of protests from both directors led to the game almost being cancelled. Squaresoft eventually pieced what little they could of a story together and released it late.
Its decent. Its not a fucking masterpiece. Fantastic soundtrack. Decent plot. Comfy characters. Aged well.

Hilda Garde 3 was a pretty cool airship and nice music for it.
But you get it for like two hours worth of gameplay.
Everything else was ok. Chocobo stuff was fun, especially when you figure out how to get far in it while still in disc one.
It's not a masterpiece; at all.
I hated the art direction for character design. Vivi is the only character that makes it work. On top of that, the ability system is the WORST and most grindy shit they could have chosen. It's the same system that made Tactics Advance such a dogshit game. Learning abilities from equipment is trash tier.

The tactics advance series was a massive disappointment; even moreso if you came from PSX FFTactics looking for more of that same quality.

I don't know what, but I absolutely adore the entire concept behind them, but when I actually have to PLAY one, I never finish it. I got pretty far into Tales of Vesperia and Chrono Trigger, but other than that, I usually stop fairly quickly.
Anyone maybe have jrpgs I would stomach easier, or at least tips on how not to be such a fucking autist with the one's I've already tried? I made it MAYBE a couple hours into FF9, and only a few more into FF7- both of which get nothing but praise. I should be enjoying them, right?

What it does exceptionally well is the sense of fun, adventure and charm.
You stage a play, kidnap a princess then team up with her, fly across the earth, watch cities fall and friends die, discover ancient secret places in the world, and eventually visit the stars. All while trying to get a handful of cute princess butt.
May not be a masterpiece but when I think back on the PlayStation FFs it is by far the one with the most moments that bring a smile to my face.

How old are you?
Most people who fell in love with Final Fantasy and JRPGs in general did so as kids. When you're a kid their stories seem deep and epic and you can't wait to keep playing to find out what happens next. As an adult you see them for what they are, basic fantasy adventure stories with a lot of common tropes set against a few original and creative pieces of lore.
If you're not super invested in the story, there's very little to keep you coming back in 99% of JRPGs. Their combat systems are almost universally shallow and repetitive and there is little else to do except walk around very basic locations, talk to NPCs and look for secret items.

Yeah, but without the sense of drama and scale that FF9 has. FF7 was trying to be more of a cerebral/sci-fi influenced story with a message. FF9 was focused almost entirely on just being about a war between good and evil and making that as grand as possible.
I liked 7 too of course and I agree it had many fun and lighthearted moments but it just didn't have the same feel that 9 got so right. Going back to 9 feels warm in a way that 7 doesn't. That's the best way I can think to describe it.

Lost Odyssey - Its got Cid, and its the only decent release since 12.
FF Tactics - Yes its easy, but you dont have to power level.
FF 8 - At least the card game did something.
FF7 / FF6 / X - Good not great, just didnt age as well. X has really good gameplay but terrible the voice acting and flat characters made it hard to get into the world.
FF 3 / 4 - DS Ports are surprisingly legit.
FF 5 - Fun, but not terribly memorable.
FF 1 - Really more of a bucketlist thing anymore.
