Play in the release order. Start with no mods - only latest patch, OR get the full "Starter Pack" first; these contain bug-fixers and light visual mods that can help performance as well.
Leave big overhauls for later playthrougs. Avoid the "Complete" -mods. Always play on MASTER difficulty for best realism and atmosphere, and disable crosshair.
Don't give up in the beginning! The starting gear sucks ass and first area can be a bit boring.

Different games.
SoC has maybe about 10 small to medium maps, while CoP has 3 big maps.
After playing the franchise, just download Call of Chernobyl which has all maps of the franchise in one game.
No story-mod tho, it's just Slav Simulator 2015.

Clear Sky is the second game, released in 2008, and is plot-wise a prequel to SoC.
CoP is the 3rd and final game, released in 2010, and sequel to SoC's plot.

Every second Loner rookie and Bandit uses sawnoffs in SoC, and later on people start packing Maverick pump-actions and even SPAS-12 shotguns.

CoP is more polished, but it's also like a theme park. Vast open maps, anomalies are obvious and neatly grouped so you can avoid them when you're not short on cash, mutants keep to the edges of the maps, you are always a couple of sprints away from the safehouse, stalker patrols everywhere, neutral bandits and mercs, there's no sense of loneliness and dread that made SoC so oppressive. You can really feel it when you visit the Jupiter plant, the specific feeling that place gives you is largely absent from the rest of the game.
