San Andreas is the ultimate map, it actually gave you several different cities with their own feel and a bunch of shit in between.

That new piece of shit has A city and the rest is fucko. If anything the one with Nico felt bigger than the newest one and I hate that fucking game.

I still enjoy the ant size maps of vice city and 3 way more than the newer games

I hope it's smaller and they devote time to actually making things to do in the map.

They fucked up by making one relevant city and then some tiny hermit villages. Countryside is so overrated, gta is at its best in dense cities.

They said up front they were going to release next-gen versions. It's your own fault for not reading the announcements before you bought the PS3 version.

Countryside is great, but it doesn't exist in GTAV. More than half of the map has nothing, what the fuck
>>

You bought a game, ANY game, day one, based on marketing promises. You will do it again, no doubt about it. Next "motherfucking <franchise>" comes along, you'll be out there, buying it, or preordering it, playing it day one, and regretting it a month later. If you're that easily manipulated by marketing and hype, there's no hope for you.

>>
>>333734559
there are no USA in GTA, and from a game world design point of view, coasts represent natural borders that players are more easily to accept than invisible walls

The fog wall, slower speeds, more immediate variety in the landscapes (as in, the "ghetto" area is only 3 blocks instead of the 20 it is in GTAV).

open world games just become more empty and repetitive the larger they get, where you could be placed at random somewhere and you couldn't tell where you were without looking at the minimap, because it looks the same as every other place

this is why open world is a meme. it's not the size that counts, it's the variety

San Andreas perfectly combined a well paced story and good map design to facilitate this story. Along with the great supporting characters that fit the narrative like a glove, you progress steadily with sinister forces pushing you from one place to the next as CJ does his best to fight against it and work his way up the food chain. By the time you finish up at San Fierro and Las Venturas you are becoming successful with influential friends and have fingers in many pies, and the long awaited return to Los Santos is satisfying way to finish the epic journey as you come full circle to reclaim your home and destroy its enemies. Along the way you have engaged in gang warfare, battled corrupt cops, infiltrated military installations, uncovered extra terrestrial conspiracies, pulled off jobs for shady government agents, dabbled in Bonnie and Clyde style raids, built up successful businesses and pulled off sophisticated casino heists. That game is the perfect GTA that will probably never be bettered.
>>
>>333735758
It's an excellent story-heavy open world sandbox, but a GTA it ain't. That series ended with GTA 2 and there's no successor in sight. Chinatown Wars tried, but fell short.

I refuse to believe RDR's map is that small.
>>
>>333728732
The more I think about GTA the more I want to buy 4 for PC. 4 was pretty good compared to 5.
>>
The map being bigger doesn't matter if it lacks content. Older GTAs had more content than IV and V, so it doesn't matter the map size because you're busy being entertained.
>>
>>333736706
You're right, I forgot that one. Probably best forgotten. As for what I mean. GTA is an arcade game, free form and free roam car based score chase with missions, a focus on mapless navigation and not much of a story, just enough flavor text to justify the missions. The "story" mattered so little, you were a non-descript gangster and the image only mattered for the score board. Cars were so important, foot navigation leaves you slow and vulnerable and the whole camera was with cars in mind. Ever since GTA III the thing turned into a story delivery with a lot of focus on the foot work, navigational aids and just a tight "direction" for the player. That's cool if you like stories and sandboxes, I suppose. But it's just not the same thing, and I don't think I've seen any game like GTA since.
>>
>>333728732
Bigger doesn't always mean better.
GTA: SA, VC probably has the most memorable areas where so the new GTA has no memorable areas and it just feels pale.
>>
>>333734771

The formula of a series can change though, although I understand what you mean.

Most of my nostalgia with the series is with 3/VC, although GTA 2 LAN was fun as heck.

> skyrim

There are two reasons skyrim felt huge compared to the much larger GTA V.

The first issue is transportation. Only being able to walk limits the speed of map exploration significantly. You see a difference in the map when you ride a horse and the map becomes scenery you pass by on route to some destination. On foot the world is very intimidating in its scope with miles of terrain to explore and every foot of it can be treacherous. Driving in GTA V removes your interaction with the environment and changes it all to scenery as you speed past it at 80+MPH.

The other reason is depth of the map, meaning the amount to do on the map outside of quests/missions. In GTA you seek out the missions by driving to icons on the map where you are given scripted tasks to accomplish. The amount of individuals who give you missions/quests in GTA is extremely limited and the number of missions available is only about 3 or 4 per individual. In skyrim, the number of quests is staggering with half of the games NPC's giving you some odd objective or another not to mention the different guild/quest storylines that add so much to the game's content. Add the numerous barrows, caves, thieves dens, bandit hideouts, forsworn camps, etc, and the map is truly brought to life giving the player easily 100+ hours of content.

The map in GTAV is big, but lifeless. there are relatively few missions or quests to keep the player interested. There are also very limited number of buildings to explore and secrets/easter eggs to discover. They created a beautiful playground but didn't think to give you any playmates. Even your ability to interact with npc's is severely limited.

I'd maybe accept it more if the game was just evolving, but III was a hard cut. Such a hard cut that I left the series behind until SA came along, as it was a whole different genre that didn't interest me. I got and played SA, but not as a GTA game, and haven't touched any of its successors, because despite the massive fun I had with SA, I couldn't shake the feeling it's just a world map with a minigame collection. Well, got to make the exception for Chinatown Wars. I tend to call it GTA 3, because it picks up a lot of elements from the original series.
It's more like Doom suddenly doing Halo gameplay (oh boy), or NFS suddenly doing ricers instead of luxury cars (good thing that didn't happen). You can do it, obviously, but it won't go over well with a large share of players. It worked for GTA, because the games are so very different in gameplay and presentation, lots of GTA fans won't even bother with anything before III. The games are too different. That's not the formula changing throughout the series. That's one series replacing another one.

That's because you always drive through the highway, there's no reason to stop and there's nothing to be seen in the middle

Because 90% of the game happens in LS and you mostly drive around there, while GTA SA spent a lot of time focusing on different parts.

I could probably fit in a whole Mercator map and make it smaller than Vice City in that pitcure OP so give me more redible sources than an idiot in paint please.

Also SA always will feel bigger because it was much more diverse. It had desert, it had la vegas, it had forests, it had san francisco, it had grass lands and los angeles. It was on a much smaller scale than V, but 5 is just la and desert
>>
>>333740430
>the core gameplay is the same
Not to me. I can still only talk about 1/2 vs. SA and CTW, but the map alone, I mean, having an ingame map and a minimap, is a huge difference. The strong focus on story vs. simple missions, is also pretty noticeable. The removal of score is sad (I didn't like it in 2 already), and the ability to actually defend yourself quite well on foot is like a real game changer. I agree with you on CTW having quite story driven, and didn't like it that much. It was nice though to find again a bit of a focus on cars, and the old camera with a modest update. The huge amount of minigames bothered me, but that's modern GTA, sadly. So, yes, I do consider CTW a massive step down from GTA 1 and even 2. But it's still closer to GTA than any of the other games with that name. To me, anyway.
>>
What the fuck is that thing left of VC's map?

I should add, it actually bothered me quite massively that CTW had a minimap and navigation system.

I'd be fine with a smaller map if it had an equally-sized interior world, unlike GTA V which had clothing shops and convenience stores. While it's fun to drive around huge urban sprawls, a world with little exploration is pointless in a sandbox game. Scenery can only sustain you for so long.
