>A few things I learned about virtual reality after spending way too much time in it
>A lot of the stuff out there shows massive promise — but plenty of it is not great. I checked out most of the 30 Oculus Rift launch titles, and I’d say maybe five are really great examples of what VR brings to the table. Many aren’t really improved by VR; they’re just okay games that happen to have VR support. Some of them are actually made worse by poorly shoehorned VR into an otherwise intriguing game (I wanted to love you, Chronos, but your fixed camera that changes wildly from room to room is the worst.) The Vive has some truly mindblowing stuff that brings in its motion-sensing controllers, but it’s largely short demo experiences right now.
>VR Neck is a thing. Strapping a headset to your face for hours on end and throwing your head about makes your neck hurt.
>Both the Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive have long, thick cables attached to them — cables that are easily tripped over or caught on your foot while you sit at your desk. Trip over that wire and you’ve just sent your $500+ headset, with its fragile innards, rocketing toward the ground. It’s an easy but super-expensive mistake to make.
>Get used to having a little ring around your eyes/nose where the headset had been sitting, much like the one you might get after wearing snowboard goggles.
B-but it's not a gimmick...

VR is the future, deal with it
>VR isn't really worth it without roomscale
>Roomscale completely limits what kind of games you can make with VR
Gimmick confirmed.

>A lot of the stuff out there shows massive promise — but plenty of it is not great.
Oh hey look, it's what literally everyone has ever said about software on any piece of brand new technology since the dawn of fucking time.
I'm pretty sure, if you go back far enough, there's a caveman who is entirely unimpressed with fire because hey, heating the cave shows promise, but there just aren't many practical applications for it
>>333705375
Looking at all those teleport games ruined ask my hope. That's the best they have for movement? The only game I want to play with oculus is Subnautica, and given how bad lag hurts when you're wearing one, the game needs to be a lot better optimised before that's going to be cool.
>>333705996
>other people have said similar things about successful technologies and they were wrong, so that means that they're wrong in this case as well!
Do you know why it seems like you only ever hear about people who were told "you can't", and then became successes? Not the failures, or the people who "didn't"?
Because those millions of other people, failures and quitters, never became famous. There are many more examples of "innovative" technologies which failed than ones which succeeded. A super-expensive not-even-actually-VR headset is no doubt going to be wildly financially successful, but won't be practically successful - it won't actually add anything to the industry.
>>333706973
I'm not claiming success or failure, I'm saying people are jumping the gun on calling it one way or the other.
>>333705996
tell that to the Virtual Boy
>>333704764
The only "VR" that won't be a gimmick will be a hologram-suite type of VR.
Ye in time they will shrink the goggles but you will always be just an idiot bobbing his head in directions and reacting/yelling in an empty room and flinging your arms left and right.
>>333707987
And also it's not VR, it's just a portable TV strapped to you head.

>Wait until it goes Wireless
I think VR has a place but it wont be ready for a while.
Did anyone expect anything less? This is only 2nd Gen VR with the first gen been a utter failure.
Also another thing nobody touches on is the lack of pixel contentration in the center of the screen, apparently you can still see the pixels if your focused on one point and not looking around.
By the time 4K and 8K VR rolls out and GPU's have caught up ill try VR for sure.

It's stupid. Not to mention having lights on doesn't make sense for a vr experience.
If Sony decides to release their VR on PC as well (which would be the most clever move to do as you would only increase your sales,) it might become the definitive VR hardware, as its the cheapest alternative + Sony will actively develop games themselves and pay other developers to develop games for it.
Also, if it comes to PC, it WILL get porn stuff made on it, and as we have seen in the past from the betamax vs. VHS duel, the cheapest alternative with the best option of porn always wins.

The thing that gets me is that everyone who was hyped for it got so sucked up into the marketing gimmick of calling it virtual "reality"
Because no, it's not. It isn't a stepping-stone to Matrix-like sensory simulation. It isn't the harbinger of fuckable 2D waifus just aroud the corner. It's literally a 3D computer monitor strapped to your head with a gyroscope in it.
The world's most innovative and talented game designers couldn't do something groundbreaking with that, because it literally just lets you look around a little bit. That isn't anywhere CLOSE to enough to create the illusion of an actual physical replacement of reality.
And, y'know, expensive, requires cutting-edge hardware, makes the game look like shit visually, and is uncomfortable and akwkward to wear for long periods.
>>333708280
I went to a Vive demo earlier this week and the little shit in front of me in the queue pulled the headset cord out twice. The thing just yanked out of its jack though, forcing the woman running the demo to restart steam and relaunch the sim while he sighed loudly. But the headset didn't fly off his head and he didn't fall over (unfortunately).
He did, however, get carried away during Job Simulator and sent a Vive remote sailing across the demo area and into a canvas banner. That's actually a bit of a worry because I can imagine getting carried away myself in more immersive or exciting games and potentially damaging myself or the equipment.

Anyone here actually read the Oculus developers' best practices guide? It basically says "you need to be making games where the player's body moves as little as possible, that don't attempt to convey large amounts of acceleration or speed, and with almost no lateral or reversed movement".
I cannot think of a single good first person game ever made in history that satisfies those requirements.

Well that's because there's not a big audience to serve big budget titles to. Additional strapping VR to existing titles many times just plainly doesn't work or deliver a good experience. Game needs to be built with VR in mind. Console games ported to the PC is a good analogy – the game won't use the potential PC has and vice versa.

>it only works with even more gimmicks
>Wii-like gaems are the best in this innovative device!
The main difference about Vive Controllers and Kinect or PSMove is that on Vive tracking is basically one to one (to the point where front camera is useless, you can grab anything from VR representation). Kinect and Move on the other hand are inaccurate and twitchy shit. Also having representation of the tracked in 3D environment, instead of 2D screen really helps.
All of those result in the possibility of motion controls actually getting a "non-gimmick" status (it still doesn't have one, because Devs for now try to port Wii games on it for the quick buck). If they manage to simulate hand positioning (so you don't have 2 floating pistols for example) I really think it would help immerse yourself in game.

Not really, it's pretty much inherent to the fresnel lenses they're using. However, like FoV and screendoor, it's not something you really notice after you get into the game.

TrackIR is not the same at all, you're still just looking at a 2D screen.

The problem is that people keep making VR into something it doesn't need to be. Admittedly, the only hands-on experience I have is with my Samsung Gear VR headset, but with it the best experience I had was with a first-person horror game (think along the lines of Outlast or Amnesia). The graphics were very primitive, but the game was still really immersive, and VR definitely added to the experience.
The game is controlled with a controller. That's the key point. It's a game that, if it allowed you to, you could easily play on a normal screen with a controller. The VR headset enhances the experience (significantly, in this case).
People should stop trying to make these crazy VR-only games, and focus on enhancing existing game concepts with VR.
>>333711414

>>333711494
see >>333711474
Many people play with TrackIR for years and had no such issues, and many people play games like Dirt Rally in locked first person view, even more restrictive view, yet don't have issues. And on top of that, many people also drive 3rd person and do it just fine even if the camera and car don't align properly (mid-air/lost grip).
The headset will purely come down to making the weak willed casuals sick or the decent players fine, because it's that typical line of claiming it's not possible to differentiate games from real life for decades.
Not saying there aren't people who are susceptible to that, but then they're basically disabled if they are.

>I want this shovel-ware garbage we have
What Carmack says is true but what he said for the most part about VR is GUIDELINES for making sure MARKETING doesn't blow up with "It's like you're there!" and people demoing it there throw up.
He says you NEED a high frame rate, but also says there are "issues" with vision/momentum hangups.
Meanwhile day 1 of DK1 a guy plays Half Life 2 with VR flawlessly, with a hack of a mod slapped on.
VR is a controller just like a HOTAS, and a monitor set-up just like triple displays. But that's all it ever has to be. Things that revolve around a single device e.g. motion controls or stereoscopic effects fail hard because it neglects just about everything but that one thing.
>>333711935
You sound like the people incapable of understanding you can't just "add VR" to a game and expect it to be fine.
Your game HAS to keep it in mind if you want it to be a good experience. unlocked head movement, no jarring animations, all kinds of things.
I'm going to admit, /v/, and please don't think low of me, but...
The only reason I want VR is to spend time with my waifu. I literally could not give a shit about anything else.

>>333711797
Fundamentally different with TrackIR because it's not encompassing your entire field of view. You still have the stationary room visible all around you to cue your body into the fact that you are stationary.
The goggles remove that. Motion sickness is the order of the day whenever your eyes say "we're moving" and your inner ear says "no we aren't". That's not about being a casual, it's about basic human biology.
>>333712034
>do you assume everyone online, the hundreds of people, who say shit like that are getting paid by Sony?
No, I assume Sony lies at conventions (they do, regularly) and people lap it up.

>>333712072
You could always just get a real pony.
>>333712178
There is literally no middle ground faggot, unless you're talking about making a game in two parts: Regular and VR exclusive.
Like making it so it will only register input from a HMD, otherwise nothing happens. Or you can just try and alternate method like playing FPSes with a controller instead of a keyboard/mouse.
People can play Doom with toasters, doesn't make ideal but the game didn't have to be changed in any way either.

How come Markiplier, Pissed off Pedro, and Peedeepee don't blow chunks in their livestreams and LPs or horror games, walking simulators, and other games where they're moving around using a controller?

>>333712318
>There is literally no middle ground
Not the guy you're talking to, but the element of fluid head movement has been around in flight simulators since the late 90s. First came head tracking devices that allowed you to use your head to look around, now comes VR which doesn't just allow you to use your head to look around but also moves the screen with you.
These flight simulators were not built for VR. If not for VR you'd be using head trackers a hat-switch on your joystick or the mouse to look around.
In that regard, simulators ARE that middle-ground he's talking about. Or rather, they've been VR games from the very beginning, with their virtual cockpits and free head movement, it's just that we had no VR. Still, people played them without VR.
>>333712481
High tolerance for motion sickness?
Willing to grin and bear it for entertainment's sake?
Playing a single short horror game through doesn't speak to the cumulative effect of wearing it for long gameplay sessions across multiple games?
Or maybe because those games all play to VR's strengths: they're slow (at least most of the time). They don't involve a sensation of high speed, demand responsive lateral/backward movement, or suggest a great degree of bodily movement below the head.
got my shit in the mail a few days ago, I can't describe what it leaves you with but it's blatently obvious that this is here forever and any PC gamer needs this, having a high end PC and not having a vive or rift is just unthinkable to me after onlly a few days with this. >>333712691

>>333712838

>>333712938
I'm not making this shit up, this is directly from the Oculus Rift developer's guide. Minimizing bodily motion and speed is considered a best practice by the people who manufacture the fucking hardware precisely because motion sickness IS an issue.
>>333711251
This, exactly.
I'd use VR mostly for sims and interactive-bullshit like walking sims, because those games really don't require much to keep the immersion up. Plus they can use scripted events more freely compared to actual games.

I'm not sure. I never asked. My friend is working on a Vr project in college and I got to come in to playtest everyone's games. The six games I mentioned were actual retail games, though. I'm not Judging it based on amateur projects.

The state that vr is now is early adapter oriented, i would say sony is doing the whole state of things a disservice by making their vr set so cheap. It's supposed to be an expensive shit for people who live for this type of shit. Until there are multiple VR ariented titles you can't call it something more than a fun thing for people with a shitton money to spare. It is the future though.
>>333716261
It would be an absurdly dull game if it was just traditional FPS controls. The entire fun of it is in moving around behind cover, and having to actually aim your guns.

I know everyone is shitting on VR in here, but I have a question:
SteamVR told me my computer was in the green area to be able to run the Vive alright, but the test program you download for the Occulus is telling me my CPU isn't meeting recommended specs (it's one model before the recommended CPU)
Will I suffer shitty frame drops etc. if I buy into VR? or does the GPU do most of the work?
>>333704931
So is Trump. Doesn't mean I'm happy about it.
>>333721057
The benchmark already shows you how you can keep stable 90 fps, doesn't it?
>>333721057
the cpu is the least of your problems
>>333721057
afaik the i5 2500k line and up is all good if you overclock.
Im running 3570k and the only trouble ive heard for it is from job simulator. But many people dont overclock so that might be limiting them.
>>333721182
Yes the SteamVR one does and is all in the green; but the Occulus version is just a small exe which scans your hardware, and it told me my CPU wasn't good enough.
My CPU: i5 4460
Rec CPU: i5 4590
>>333721139
Trump's future was over when he lost Wisconsin. VR's future was over when Facebook bought Occulus.

I can see non-VR FPS mechanics feeling really boring after trying stuff like these videos. Pointing and clicking just seems too simple after seeing stuff like this.
VR is the future, not the present
being an early adopter is one of the most retarded things you can be
>>333722346
Dunno man. A lot about FPS is the movement, and you can't fully replicate that in VR. I can see both concepts coexisting.
>>333722346
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wt_DlzmIHjw
>dat trigger pull
>>333711707
This. I rather want to play older games immersive fps games like Elder Scrolls and Half Life with VR, than this fucking awful motion control bullshit.
But I've heard that a lot people get motion sickness if the body is walking while they are not. Any merit to that? I've seen ton of games that don't use the dumb teleporting shit and no one seems to have gotten sick by it.
>>333723094
>Any merit to that?
Yeah, that happens to varying degrees. Some of the people who tried the official VR version of Minecraft reported it, for example.
Things like circlestrafing seem to be especially bad, which makes sense because a movement like that would create acceleration, and that's what your inner ear expects to pick up but doesn't in VR.
>>333706376
Teleportation is not going to go away any time soon. The only way we're going to get better movement is when those treadmills become a thing, but that's an expensive peripheral ontop of an expensive peripheral.
Moving around without a proper frame of reference feels awful. It will very quickly give you headaches or make you sick, and this is for people that never get sick when playing games.
The current future of VR movement is going to be cockpit + controller-backed movement or standing + teleportation.
well, the Vive controllers seem super cool
>>333722632
the most retarded thing you can be is being you
>>333704764
Some people get motion sickness from regular 3d graphics and most people get headaches from staring at an LCD tv for too long, so of course this direction to take VR will never be successful when it makes those problems way worse.
>>333723343
>>333723447
If this is the case then I guess VR is a lost cause.
>>333723634
>most people get headaches from staring at an LCD tv for too long
They do?
Anyway, VR headsets don't use LCD screens.
>>333723634
VR has neither of those problems when properly calibrated.
>>333723667
Yes, just like video games were a lost cause. Why play a football game when you could just play real football, etc.
>ordered my headset first wave within the first 5 minutes

>>333723761
>Yes, just like video games were a lost cause. Why play a football game when you could just play real football, etc.
What a bad comparison. Playing a game and playing a sport are two very different things, VR is an addition to games. An addition which is so far only making your experience worse.
>>333704764
Weak people should avoid 1st gen VR. It's not meant for them.
>>333724341
I'm glad to see you missed the point and are retarded.
>>333724341
Except nearly every complaint is that the games people have thrown together for it suck. It's like saying your new monitor sucks because you didn't have fun when you played gone home on it.
>>333724373
>niche, expensive computer technology is not meant for nerds
jocks pls go
>>333725117
Maybe we're discussing different things then? You've already missed my point.
>>333725327
Except it seems that most people want to expand on "gone home" instead of working on the limitations it has. And so far, none of these new ideas have been a success. In the end people just want to sit on their ass and play a game with good and responsive controls.
>>333708103

Just wait for a revised model and price ez.
I would literary suck 100 dicks to be able to afford a Viveassuming no one would ever know
>>333709808
Illusion is nice, but they need to learn to how optimise their games. I don't know if they fixed it yet, but the version of the latest Sexy Beach, which was important enough for them to be plastered over a fucking building in Akihabara, barely ran at 10 FPS on high quality on my very decent if now two-year-old system.
>>333712862
They had to tighten it after they realized certain head positions made the set move and lose focus.
>>333716181
I have the M50X and really like them, but I am not entirely sure they are the best fit for VR. Being closed, their sound stage is very limited and the sound appears to come from the centre of your head as opposed to the area around you. Something with an open design would probably be better.
I'm glad I canceled my pre order. Still on the hype train though. Can't wait for gen 2.
