For example, i've never found any mario game to be great or fantastic beyond Sunshine, the rest just seem like enjoyable but very standard video games.

I don't get turned off by tedium. I'll play the same Dynasty Warriors game over and over for years and love it. I love grinding in monster hunter. I even get a certain kick out of grinding in turn-based JRPGs.

They feel so lazy and rehashed again and again. SRPGs are different, as you have to at least use positioning and some modicum of tactics provided you're not playing on babby mode and can't grind.

I loved Dark Souls bug couldn't get into 2. Not because of hitboxes, level design, or bosses. The movement just seems weirdly sluggish and unresponsive.
MGSV is a 7 or 8 out of 10, nothing more. It has some very strong pros like great controls, optimization and performance with some very fun moments, but after 20 hours or so it's flaws are clearly exposed and it turns into a really soulless game. Is it a shit game? No, but a decent one that doesn't feel like a MGS.

V, VII, XI, XIII are probably the best for seeing what the series has to offer as far as combat and game design. I haven't played XII yet because I don't have a PS2, but from what I've heard, it could probably take the place of XIII on the list I've provided

That's because the movement was sluggish and unresponsive. The agility stat fucks with too many things, from i-frames when rolling, to the speed you drink estus and raise your shield.
Have you seen the default turning on ds2? There's a webm of the turning circle your character makes and it is appaling.
The only Fallout game I enjoyed was New Vegas.
I played both the original one and two and hated it, mostly because I'm just not that big a fan on turn based combat and had no idea what I was doing. Three was okay but nothing special. The RPG aspects weren't that great and the story was lame.
New Vegas managed to have a good mix of complexity whilst still being enjoyable for me and is one of my absolute favorite games.
Platinum isn't anywhere near as good as Clover, who were themselves not as good as Team Viewtiful/Capcom Production Studio 4.
Dark Souls is dull and repetitive.
Bionic Commando on the Game Boy is the best Bionic Commando game.

There are turn based RPGs where positioning is important though. Play Arc Rise Fantasia, it's important where your characters are. And yes, you do need some actual tactics to win. You can't just spam heal and attack and prevail. Also, preparation alone isn't key because the battle AI actually changes. If done right, turn based RPGs can be very engaging and difficult.
